Liptovské Matiašovce lies in the valley of the Suchá stream between the Chočské vrchy and the Západné Tatry. The municipality combines a distinct valley setting with varied landscape features and a rich church history. This offers two different priorities when choosing a destination: cultural history centered on the Church of Saint Ladislaus, and a cycling route with specified figures that passes along the edge of the municipality.

Valley, rolling hills, and protected area

The Matiašovecké háje are a plateau-like submontane hilly landscape at an elevation of 700 to 900 meters, with meadows and pastures. The forested northeastern part of the municipality, which lies in the Západné Tatry, is different. For anyone who wants to understand the landscape by more than the name of a mountain range, this provides two specific points of reference: the open rolling hills and the wooded northeast. Liptovské Matiašovce is also considered a gateway to the Suchá Valley, which is, in a sense, a boundary valley of TANAP.

The immediate surroundings of the Suchý potok form the most important biocorridor in the municipality. In TANAP’s 2025–2034 management program, the black poplar Matiašovský topoľ (Populus nigra L.) is listed for Liptovské Matiašovce in the register of protected trees in the protection zone. Northeast of Liptovské Matiašovce, at the forest edge near the mouth of the Suchá Valley, lies the westernmost point of the national park and its protection zone. These points of reference relate to different features: the biocorridor, the tree register, and the described park boundary.

Church and religious history

The Church of Saint Ladislaus combines architectural elements from two centuries. It is surrounded by an 18th-century Baroque fortification with loopholes and bastions. Inside is an early Baroque altar of Saint Ladislaus dating from the mid-17th century. The church also contains the crypt of the Matiašovský family, its patrons. The exterior and interior furnishings thus reflect different aspects of church history: the fortification on the one hand, and the altar and patron family on the other.

The chapel in Vyšné Matiašovce also has its own historical context: it was built on the site of a former wooden bell tower and served for funeral ceremonies. A parish history records that since 2017, a Mass is held on the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross—except for funerals—and a Shepherds’ Mass is held at Christmas. If you would like to include one of these occasions in your plans, check the specific service time in advance.

In the lower part of the valley, Dúpnica Cave is considered a sanctuary dating from the later Hallstatt period, around 500 BC. This archaeological interpretation adds a much older historical layer to the church buildings.

A cycling route with clear reference figures

The Podtatranská cycling route No. 007 passes along the edge of Liptovské Matiašovce and continues to Kvačany. The route is 34.7 kilometers long, has 633 meters of ascent, and is listed with an estimated duration of three hours. It is suitable for mountain bikes. The distance, elevation gain, and time estimate make the route easy to plan as a separate tour; the estimated three hours help indicate how much time to allow. Check route conditions before setting out.
