Veterná Poruba lies on the ridge of Mount Štefanka at an elevation of 820 metres, in the central part of the Liptov Basin. To the north rise the peaks of the Western Tatras. This makes the main landscape features clear: the basin and the mountains along its northern side. The village’s history includes a Protestant Bethhouse, a bell tower, and an amateur theatre tradition that continues to this day. A 10-kilometre Nordic walking loop also runs from Smrečany to Veterná Poruba and back.

History in Buildings and Objects

The bell tower is considered the oldest surviving building. It was built in 1853 after the great fire of 1850. The Protestant Bethhouse was built in 1873 on the site of a smaller wooden Bethhouse dating from 1862. The distinction between the dates is important: 1862 refers to the smaller wooden predecessor, while 1873 marks the later Bethhouse built on the same site.

In 1892, the Bethhouse received an organ from the Protestant church in Jasenová. It remains in use today after being restored. The Bethhouse also houses a wooden statue of an archangel from the original church of Svätý Štefan. The organ’s provenance and continued use are both significant; for the statue, its material, origin, and location in the Bethhouse are the defining details.

Amateur Theatre with a Long History

Amateur theatre in Veterná Poruba has a tradition of more than a hundred years, which continues to the present day. The first performance took place in 1918, with the play “Eulália sa chce vydávať”; the author is unknown. Unlike the buildings, the focus here is on an enduring cultural tradition. The year 1918 marks its specific historical beginning.

Circular Trail and Mountain Panorama

The 10-kilometre circular trail from Smrečany to Veterná Poruba and back is suitable for Nordic walking. It offers panoramic views of the Western Tatras, the Low Tatras, and the Choč Mountains. While the Western Tatras lie to the north of the village, the circular route broadens the landscape to include three mountain ranges.

At the fifth kilometre, the circular trail passes the vanished settlement of Svätý Štefan. This adds a specific historical point of interest along the route to the surrounding landscape. The 10-kilometre distance gives you a concrete basis for planning; the route combines exercise and mountain views with a historical point of interest along the way.
