In the eastern part of the Liptovská kotlina, Malužiná lies on the northern slopes of the Nízke Tatry. The mountain landscape provides a setting for visits that combine local history and nature: mining and glassmaking are part of the village’s past, the Malužinská jaskyňa lies above it, and a route passes through the Malužinská dolina. This lets you choose cultural and landscape themes for your stay based on specific destinations.

Mining History and Historic Buildings

The settlement was founded in the second half of the 18th century as a mining village, around a copper hammer built in 1771. The glassworks is also part of the village’s history: it operated from the 18th century until 1885. Mining and glass production give Malužiná two distinct historical themes that can be explored separately.

The village’s architectural history includes the Roman Catholic Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross (“Povýšenia svätého Kríža”), dating from 1816. Another historic landmark is the former inn with a bowling alley from the early 19th century, which is listed as a national cultural monument. Together with the remains of earlier industries, the church and inn offer different ways to explore the history of the village.

Cave, Exhibition and Mine Gallery

The Malužinská jaskyňa lies above Malužiná, on the left-hand side of the Bocianska dolina, and formed in dolomite rock. It is approximately 328 metres long, 250 metres of which are open to the public. The visit begins with an approximately ten-minute uphill walk, followed by a guided tour underground. Helmets and headlamps are part of the cave visit.

The exhibition on mining and speleology is located in the main building of Speleocamping Malužiná, right next to reception. Exhibits include miners’ lamps, minerals and ores extracted from mines. A guided tour of the exhibition takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes, providing a separate time frame from the cave visit.

The accessible “Baňa Zubaustollen” mine gallery is at the beginning of the Malužinská dolina. It is just under two kilometres on foot from the Speleocamping reception to the gallery; advance reservations by phone or email are recommended. The walking information therefore differs: an approximate uphill walking time is given for the cave, while a walking distance from reception is given for the gallery.

Tickets for the cave, mine gallery or exhibition can be purchased at the Speleocamping reception at Malužiná 21. Visitor parking is in front of the buffet at Malužiná 158, approximately ten metres from reception. As ticketing, reservation and parking arrangements may change, check the latest information before your visit.

Mountain Landscape and Route

The Ohnište plateau, a national nature reserve, lies west of Malužiná. For nature planning, this single protected area offers a contrast to a route with several named stops: “Chorupné cez Malužinský Tajch” follows forest paths through the Malužinská dolina to the Malužinský Tajch and onward to Chorupné, before returning to Malužiná. This makes it possible to choose between a protected landscape destination and a route that takes in a valley, a tajch and a return to the village, without treating them as the same outing.
