Vrútky combines routes at the foot of the Lúčanská section of the Malá Fatra with cycling routes and a rich city history. This offers different ways to plan a trip: hiking on described trails, cycling on marked routes, and exploring churches, railway history and literature in the town. If you are considering Vrútky as a travel destination, you can plan your stay around your activity and cultural interests.

Landscape and Trails at the Foot of the Malá Fatra

Vrútky lies in the northern part of the Turiec Basin, on the left side of the Váh’s floodplain and terrace landscape, at the foot of the Lúčanská section of the Malá Fatra. Hiking trails in the Lúčanská Malá Fatra include routes starting at the end of Karvaša a Blahovca Street and heading towards Minčol, then continuing to Martinské hole. In 2021, the town also established the Karvaša a Blahovca educational trail.

Cycling Routes and Rest Area

Two differently described routes are available when choosing a cycling route. The red-marked Turčianska Cycling Route leads from Vrútky through Lipovec, Turčianske Kľačany, Sučany and villages at the foot of the Veľká Fatra, all the way to Turčianske Teplice. A yellow-marked cycling route runs from Vrútky along the banks of the Turiec on a newly built cycle path to Martin. The routes can be distinguished by their listed intermediate places and destinations: one passes through several villages to Turčianske Teplice, while the other follows the riverbank to Martin.

The cycling rest area in Vrútky has a shelter, parking spaces and bicycle racks. It also has charging stations for electric vehicles and e-bikes, a pump and tools for minor bicycle repairs. The facilities therefore include options for parking and charging, as well as tools for minor bicycle repairs.

Churches, Railways and Literature

Railway history gives Vrútky a distinctive historical focus: in the second half of the 19th century, the town developed into an important railway junction. The permanent exhibition of the Railway Town of Vrútky presents the town’s historical development from prehistoric times to the 20th century. Visits can be arranged by telephone in advance.

The churches also offer a brief comparison across time. The Evangelical Church of Dr. Martin Luther is a neo-Gothic building dating from 1903. The Roman Catholic Church of St. John the Baptist was also built in the neo-Gothic style in 1905 and stands on the site of an early Gothic church. The nearly contemporaneous construction dates make for a direct comparison, while the Catholic church’s location also points to an earlier building phase.

The Vrútky Synagogue was built in 1910 as a Neolog synagogue and now serves the town for cultural purposes. Another cultural connection leads to Hana Zelinová: the Slovak writer was born in Vrútky, and her memorial room contains her authentic furniture, her desk, a collection of her works published in various world languages, and other valuable exhibits. This brings sacred buildings, city history and literature together as distinct cultural themes.

Events and Outdoor Swimming Pool

Since 2020, the week-long commemorative hiking event Memoriál Stopami ukrývaných detí has begun in Vrútky each year in the first half of July. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the specific dates for your chosen travel year.

Vrútky’s municipal outdoor swimming pool offers opportunities to relax and enjoy recreational and sports swimming. If you are planning a visit, check the opening days in advance.
