An open-air museum as a starting point

The Museum of the Slovak Village in Martin presents Slovak everyday life and architectural culture in remarkable breadth. It is Slovakia’s largest ethnographic open-air museum and comprises 129 residential, agricultural, technical, social and religious structures. Some interiors are open to visitors. The variety of structures makes a visit especially interesting if you want to learn about different aspects of village life, not just individual buildings.

The museum’s Ethnographic Year programme has a history dating back to 1991. These events focus on demonstrations of traditional production, crafts, customs and folklore. The demonstrations thus complement the exhibits by offering insight into techniques and cultural forms of expression. Art and museum history

The Turiec Gallery is housed on Námestie SNP in Martin, in the former county hall, built in 1740. Its permanent exhibition is dedicated to 20th-century Slovak art and features works by artists with ties to the Turiec region. One section of the permanent exhibition focuses on Mikuláš Galanda’s painting, graphic art and applied art. Here, a historic building houses an exhibition that explores both different art forms and the connection between artists and the region.

The Andrej Kmeť Museum also holds a special place in museum history: it is located in the first building of the Slovak National Museum. Larger groups should reserve their visit in advance. Booked groups are given priority over visitors without a booking for admission and guided tours.

Martin National Cemetery is designated a national cultural monument.

Castles and their different histories

Sklabiňa Castle was the seat of the county administrators of Turiec County for 450 years. This long-standing administrative role offers a concrete starting point for exploring its history. The castle is open year-round for an entrance fee; check the latest visitor information before your visit. Zniev Castle is considered the oldest known castle in the Turiec region and stands at an elevation of 985 metres. Sklabiňa is notable for its historical administrative role, while Zniev stands out as the oldest known castle and for its elevation.

Valley, waterfall and cycling route

The Gader Valley is home to the Čertova brána rock formation and Mlynčekovo, with numerous small watermills in a range of shapes and designs. The first eight kilometres of the valley, from Blatnica to the junction with the Dedošova Valley, follow a well-maintained asphalt road suitable for road bikes and scooters. Šútovo Waterfall is 38 metres high and the tallest waterfall in the Little Fatra.

A cycling route over Martinské hole connects Vrútky and Martin over 22 kilometres and leads to the Chata na Martinských holiach mountain hut at an elevation of 1,250 metres. The hut serves snacks and refreshments; check what is currently available before setting off. If you are comparing route lengths, there are two specific figures to consider: eight kilometres for the valley section described above and 22 kilometres for the cycling route between Vrútky and Martin. Their respective endpoints and destinations help distinguish the two descriptions without combining them into a single continuous route.

A family park in the Valčianska Valley

Yetiland in the Valčianska Valley offers something different: the family park has dozens of children’s attractions, including trampolines, inflatable castles, slides and rope obstacles.
