Zniev Castle is located in the northern part of the Žiar Mountains and consists of an upper and a lower castle complex. The routes in the town offer different highlights: the ascent leads to the castle ruins, while nature trails explore the landscape, local traditions and the history of the town. When planning, consider whether you are most interested in the castle, nature along a trail or the local historical heritage.

Zniev Castle and the routes leading to it

A marked hiking trail leads to Zniev Castle above the town. The green-marked ascent starts at the cemetery in Kláštor pod Znievom, passes the Calvary complex and continues to the ruins; it takes approximately 1.5 hours. This is an estimate: the actual walking time depends on conditions and the state of the trail. The ascent is also considered suitable for families with children. Allow for the approximate duration when planning, and check the trail conditions before your visit.

The “Príbeh hradu Zniev” nature trail starts at the cemetery, passes a pond and goes through the forest below the castle. This draws attention to specific landscape features along the route, in addition to the ascent via the Calvary complex. Both descriptions focus on the castle, but highlight different aspects of the route: one gives the approximate duration and follows the Calvary complex, while the other passes a pond and forest below the castle.

Nature trails exploring the landscape and local history

The “Len taká nedeľná prechádzka” nature trail follows a paved cycle path through forests and meadows. It shares information about the local traditions of oil pressing and saffron trading. Landscape and local trading history come together as themes along this same trail, giving it a different focus from the nature trail about the castle.

The “Príbeh mestečka pod Znievom” nature trail runs through Kláštor pod Znievom. At significant buildings, it presents the town’s history and information about notable people associated with it. While “Len taká nedeľná prechádzka” explores oil pressing and saffron trading, “Príbeh mestečka pod Znievom” focuses on buildings and local history. When choosing a themed route, you can therefore weigh up local traditions against the history of the town.

Chapel, monastery and places of remembrance

The Calvary complex features a Baroque chapel dating from 1728. It contains paintings by J. B. Klemens. The monastery and church in Kláštor pod Znievom date from the mid-13th century. The monastery first belonged to the Premonstratensians and later to the Jesuits.

The Pamätná izba (Memorial Room) is located in the second building of Zniever Gymnasium, which was built in 1874. A prior appointment with the municipal office of Kláštor pod Znievom is required to visit the Pamätná izba. Arrange this before your trip, as the visiting arrangements may change.

As a digital addition, the municipality offers the “Keď osobnosti spod Znieva prehovoria” tour of local historical sites and notable people. It provides another way to explore local heritage: alongside routes through the town and historic buildings, it also focuses on the people associated with these places.
