Tomášov can be explored through its sacred architecture, local places of remembrance and the history of the Art Hotel Kaštieľ. The landscape and adventure golf complement these cultural themes; the golf course is explicitly open only in good weather. This gives you several clear points of focus when planning your trip.

Location and Church Architecture

Tomášov lies in the Podunajská nížina, in the western part of Žitný ostrov and on the alluvial ridge of the Malý Dunaj. The lowland, the western part of Žitný ostrov and the connection to the Malý Dunaj locate the town at different geographical levels.

One specific cultural landmark is the parish church, “Kostol svätého Mikuláša.” It has a single nave, a semicircular sanctuary and a rectangular bell tower. The single-nave layout, semicircular end and rectangular tower describe different features of the church building. Two Romanesque baptismal fonts are located beside the present-day church. The fonts’ Romanesque classification thus has a direct spatial connection to the present-day church. The organ also offers a precise historical detail: it dates from 1864 and has eight stops, one manual and pedals. Stops, manual and pedals each provide different clues about the instrument’s construction.

Places of Remembrance and Building History

A restored wayside cross is considered an important local monument and forms part of the story of Tomášov’s past. Its restoration was completed in 2021. The Chapel of the Holy Cross (“Kaplnka sv. Kríža”) is Neo-Gothic and was built at the end of the 19th century. The dates refer to different things: 2021 marks the completion of the wayside cross’s restoration, while the late 19th century is the chapel’s construction period. The aspects described also differ: the wayside cross is noted for its local significance as a place of remembrance, while the chapel is described in terms of its architectural style and construction date.

The Art Hotel Kaštieľ offers another historical perspective. Baron Ján Jesenák had it built between 1766 and 1769 as an aristocratic country residence in the style of Austrian Classicist Baroque. The construction period, patron, original function and style each place the building’s history in a different context.

Park, Fallow Deer and Adventure Golf

The Art Hotel Kaštieľ has a 17-hectare English-style park. Information boards explain rare tree species there; a herd of fallow deer has also lived in the park since 2012. If you are coming specifically to see the animals, check in advance whether the herd is currently there and how large it is. If the tree information boards are important to you, it is also worth checking whether they are currently in place.

The adventure golf course is open daily in good weather; admission is available at the Kaštieľ reception. Since opening depends on good weather, it is worth checking before your visit.
