Malinovo combines a location shaped by river branches with distinctive traces of its architectural and cultural history. The Little Danube flows around the village in a wide curve on three sides; strips of riparian forest run along both banks. This means nature and cultural experiences are available as distinct focuses when planning a trip.

The Little Danube offers opportunities for fishing and water tourism in Malinovo; cycling and hiking are also among the activities mentioned. Water and land each offer their own highlights: those interested in the river landscape will find a different perspective here than visitors focusing on the manor house, churches and historic sites.

Manor House, Fortress and Landscape Park

The manor house of Malinovo offers a starting point for exploring the village’s history. It stands on the foundations of a medieval water fortress with three towers and a moat. The fortress protected the crossing over the Little Danube towards Žitný ostrov. In the 17th century, Archbishop Szelepcsényi had the complex converted into a castle; after a neoclassical renovation in the 19th century, the manor house took on its present appearance. Its architectural history thus spans the fortified complex, its conversion into a castle and its neoclassical form.

An English-style landscape park surrounds the manor house. It covers just under five hectares and contains more than 200 native and foreign tree species. The manor house and park bring together architectural history and designed landscapes, while the river branches and strips of riparian forest show another, water-shaped side of Malinovo.

Churches and Historic Details

The chapel in the east wing of the manor house dates from 1677. It was built in the late-medieval Renaissance style and served as a church until 1953. The Church of St. George was built between 1869 and 1872 as a neo-Gothic crypt chapel for the Apponyi family. It preserves the original main altar, with an 18th-century statue of St. George made of red marble.

Smaller details add to this picture: the Juliana bell in the tower of the Church of St. George weighs 400 kilograms and was cast by József Pozdech in Wiener Neustadt. In the Malinovo cemetery, a restored sculptural group of St. John of Nepomuk, dating from 1739, stands in a glazed chapel. The restored Mária Chapel lies behind the church at the edge of the fields and is the final stop on the educational trail. These different historic landmarks can be distinguished by their architectural form, function and location.

Educational Trail and Getting There

The Náučný poznávací chodník offers a clearly defined timeframe for an excursion: the easy route through the built-up area of the municipality can be completed in less than an hour and includes eight information panels. It is suitable for all age groups. As the final stop, Mária Chapel gives the route a specific historic destination. When planning, visitors can therefore distinguish the short educational trail from a more in-depth exploration of the individual buildings.

A regional IDS-BK bus route serves Malinovo and connects the village to Bratislava via Ivanka pri Dunaji and Zálesie. Check the current IDS-BK timetable before travelling, as routes and journey times may change.
