Slovenské Ďarmoty combines a distinctive local history with traditional house and courtyard layouts and a connection to the Poiplie Special Protection Area. This offers different interests to consider when planning your trip: you can focus on the Church of St. Imrich and rural architecture, or include the natural area and activities in the surroundings.

Poiplie and Outdoor Activities

The southern part of the cadastral area of Slovenské Ďarmoty belongs to the Poiplie Special Protection Area. It is an important regional migration corridor for waterbirds and includes a preserved floodplain of the Ipeľ River, with riverside woodland and wetlands, as well as waterlogged and intermittently flooded meadows. The combination of floodplain landscape and bird migration makes Poiplie a distinctive natural feature of the area.

The surrounding area offers opportunities for hiking, cycling, running in nature and leisurely walks, including at Biely vrch. This lets you take your interest in nature into account when planning your trip, without combining the different activities into a fixed route.

Church, Architecture and Local History

The Church of St. Imrich was built in 1993. A tree-lined avenue leads to it and ends at an entrance gate. Inside, a triangular coloured-glass window accentuates the space’s upward-reaching character. The year of construction, tree-lined approach and window each give the church a distinct architectural accent.

The traditional folk architecture of Slovenské Ďarmoty includes older clay houses with verandas facing the courtyard, supported by wooden beams, as well as triangular plank gables. The courtyards retain separate summer kitchens, along with originally crosswise-arranged slatted huts, later masonry sheds, stables and grain stores made of clay bricks. The architecture is therefore evident not only in the houses themselves, but also in the variety of structures within the courtyards. To compare them with the church, it is worth noting their different defining features: the church’s architectural impression is shaped by its year of construction and stained-glass window, while the houses are defined by their materials, gables and courtyard layouts.

Local history also offers a range of points of interest. A plaque at the cultural centre commemorates the Czech writer Božena Němcová, who visited this area in 1852–1853. Historically, Slovenské Ďarmoty was shaped by viticulture: the first residents bought vineyards from Hungarians and lived in them. The literary connection and the history of viticulture thus add different dimensions to the area’s cultural history.

Events and Planning Your Stay

Community Day is held every year. International meetings of partner communities are also among the cultural and social events organised regularly. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these occasions, check the specific dates. Road II/527 runs through the built-up area of Slovenské Ďarmoty and connects communities in the southern part of the district with Hungary.

If you are looking for a holiday rental for a stay in Slovenské Ďarmoty, you can decide in advance what you would like to focus on: the church, traditional house and courtyard architecture, and local history make up the cultural side, while Poiplie and activities in the surrounding area offer a focus on nature. This comparison can help you decide which themes you want your stay to centre on, without requiring a fixed sightseeing itinerary.
