Chrťany lies in the flat valley of the Chrtiansky potok, at the transition between Krupinská výšina and Ipeľská kotlina. The village’s features also include preserved 19th-century houses, masonry granaries and historical wedding traditions. You can therefore choose different focuses for your stay: landscape, rural architecture or local history.

Landscape and Cellars in the Vineyards

The landscape around Chrťany is treeless and consists of flat ridges of andesitic tuff, cut through by valleys. The village itself lies in the flat valley of the Chrtiansky potok. Thus, the description focuses both on a specific valley and on a broader landscape. Cellars are set into the slopes of the vineyards, with stone-built entrances. These cellars add an architectural detail directly connected with the vineyards to the landscape theme.

Rural Architecture in the Village

Several masonry houses from the 19th century have been preserved in Chrťany and have extensive cellars. In the traditional houses of that century, wooden and masonry posts extend the roof overhang. This is a distinctive feature of the construction: the posts are connected to the part of the roof that projects beyond the building wall. The courtyards also contain masonry granaries with wooden posts. Posts are therefore found both in the houses described and in the granaries, while the structures serve different purposes. This comparison makes the variety of rural architecture more tangible than looking only at the age of the buildings.

Wedding Traditions and Local History

Various customs were part of Chrťany’s wedding traditions until the mid-20th century. Walnuts and iron objects were placed in the ends of a yoke, which was put beneath the newlyweds’ headrest. The yoke symbolised a strong bond. Before the bride went to church, she was also given a clove of garlic so that she would have only one child. These customs link objects with particular meanings and wishes.

The Radostník is also part of the historical wedding tradition. The wedding cake from Chrťany was shaped like a child and decorated with coloured paper ribbons, branches and candles. The shape of the cake and its elaborate decorations create a different focus from the customs involving the yoke and the clove of garlic: here, a specially crafted food takes centre stage. Iron ore was also mined in Chrťany in the 18th century, another aspect of the village’s history.

The bell tower was part of the former church school and later the municipal school. The old wooden school burned down; after its reconstruction, it was used as a prayer house. Along with the customs passed down through generations, the school’s history shows another aspect of the village’s architectural and cultural development.
