In Horné Plachtince, a protected village layout and a self-guided circular hike represent two different aspects of the destination. The heritage zone preserves historic plots; at Pohanský vrch, a nature trail combines natural history, geology, palaeontology and cultural history.
Heritage Zone and Building History
The designated heritage zone still preserves the plot layout shown on maps from the late 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. The history of the village is therefore reflected not only in individual buildings, but also in the historic layout of the protected area.
The protected area contains stone houses whose roofs, originally thatched, were supported by wooden or masonry pillars. The roof shapes and supporting structures add to the impression of traditional architecture, offering a perspective distinct from descriptions of individual façades.
The wooden bell tower behind the municipal office dates from 1737. The same year appears at the Evangelical church: its bell bears the date 9 September 1737, while the interior furnishings date from the time when the church was built. Two folk houses in Horné Plachtince are listed as monuments under house numbers 57 and 74, with monument numbers 1682 and 11240.
Customs and Folklore
Bažalička is dedicated to preserving family and seasonal customs in eastern Hont, particularly in Príbelce and Plachtince. The folk group performs songs and dances at cultural events in Horné Plachtince and the surrounding area. The preservation of customs and folk performances thus offer two distinct ways to experience local culture.
Pohanský vrch: Circular Trail and Nature Topics
Pohanský vrch is classified as a genofond site of significance for flora and fauna. The nature trail combines interpretation of natural science, geology, palaeontology and cultural history. Its themes therefore range from nature and the history of the Earth to the history of the region.
The nature trail starts near Horné Plachtince, above the confluence of the Suchánsky potok and the Plachtinský potok. It runs along the slopes of the southern spur of Pohanský vrch, circles the summit and returns to the starting point.
The circular route is 3.6 kilometres long, with an elevation difference of 260 metres. It is self-guided, forms a loop, can be walked in either direction and is open to hikers year-round. The route length and elevation difference offer different points of reference for planning; as trail conditions may change, check them before setting out.
Another nature trail in the valley of the Suchánsky potok leads to Trúbiaci kameň. The rock formation has two openings that produce a whistling sound when air flows through them. Alongside the longer loop, this distinctive geological formation provides a separate nature-related point of interest.
Getting to the Nature Trail
To reach the Pohanský vrch nature trail, take a bus to Horné Plachtince, then walk 1.7 kilometres north along a local road into the valley of the Plachtinský potok. Check the bus connection before departure.
