A karst circular trail through running waters, steppe and forest, together with a museum in the former home of the fairy-tale collector Pavol Emanuel Dobšinský: Drienčany brings nature and cultural history together in a compact area. The landscape lies within the protected Drienčanský kras area, known for its karst caves, karren and sinkholes.

The nature trail through Drienčanský kras

The Drienčanský kras nature trail starts in Drienčany and follows a three-kilometre circular route past karren, sinkholes and depressions, the Great and Little Drienčany Caves, and a karst pond. Along the way, the route passes through well-preserved ecosystems of running waters, steppes and forests. Its 15 stops combine scientific, nature conservation and historical information, making the route more than just a walk through the landscape.

The trail is considered an easy walk and is suitable for children and older people. It is accessible all year round and can be visited independently, without prior registration. Check local conditions before your visit. The combination of a circular route and information stops lets you explore the natural and cultural themes along the way at your own pace.

Two caves with different access conditions

The Great Drienčany Cave is not open to the public because of its importance as a wintering site for colonies of bats. The Little Drienčany Cave, by contrast, is the only publicly accessible cave in the area. Its distinctive, arched entrance openings set it apart even from the outside. Those interested in karst can use it to understand the cave landscape along the nature trail while bearing in mind the different access conditions.

Another destination for an outing is the Teplý Vrch reservoir, located close by to the south of Drienčany. Conditions there are suitable for water sports and sport fishing. These waterside activities complement the karst landscape, but are distinct from the circular trail.

Memorial parsonage and museum

The Museum of Slovak Fairy Tales is housed in the Evangelical memorial parsonage. Pavol Emanuel Dobšinský lived and worked in this house for almost 24 years. The single-storey Neoclassical building is also associated with Ján Liskai, Gustáv Liskai, Jonatan Dobroslav Čipka and Ján Čajak Jr. Visits to the museum are possible only by telephone appointment; plan at least one or two days ahead.

The Pavol Dobšinský Monument stands below the parsonage grounds. A golden feather, a golden horseshoe and golden hair represent his work through symbolic motifs. The museum, memorial parsonage and monument offer different ways to explore the literary and cultural history of the place.

Church, bell tower and castle

The Evangelical church also brings together several historical building features and furnishings. It stands on the late Romanesque foundations of an earlier place of worship, mentioned in the 13th century and again in 1513. The present-day church was built during a reconstruction in 1793. Its features include a wooden coffered ceiling, a carved wooden Protestant gallery and an organ with a Rococo case dating from 1799, which was repaired in 1804. The church is accessed via a covered wooden staircase; the building is surrounded by a wall with loopholes.

The church grounds also include a Renaissance bell tower dating from the mid-17th century. Drienčany Castle is another landmark in the area's history: it was built in the 13th century, began to fall into ruin in the 17th century, and today survives only as a ruin. The history of the buildings thus stretches from early places of worship to the remains of the medieval castle.

There are several options to choose from when planning your trip: the signposted karst circular trail, cultural and historical stops in the village, or water sports and sport fishing at the nearby reservoir. The museum requires an advance telephone appointment; the nature trail, on the other hand, can be visited independently without registration.
