Discover Rimavské Zalužany through three distinct themes: its location in the Rimava Valley, the beech and oak forests in the municipal area, and the memory of the fighting in late 1944. When planning your visit, you can decide whether you would most like to explore the landscape, local history or regional festival culture.

A location between river, forest and mountain

The municipality lies in the Rimava Valley at an altitude of 255 metres, on the right bank of the Rimava. Its territory includes many beech and oak forests. The 916-metre-high Sinec lies in the southwest of the municipal area. These details provide a concrete picture of the landscape: the river valley and wooded areas shape the surroundings, while Sinec provides a striking point of elevation.

The transport routes also help with general orientation. Road I/72, which connects Rimavská Sobota and Brezno, passes through Rimavské Zalužany. A railway line between the same towns runs parallel to it. If you are planning to travel by train, check the current timetable in advance.

Educational trail and remembrance of 1944

The SNP–Rimavská Baňa Battlefield educational trail is about 4.5 kilometres long and passes through the cadastral areas of Rimavská Baňa and neighbouring Rimavské Zalužany. It tells the story of the fighting between Slovak insurgents and German units in late 1944. The distance is approximate; terrain conditions may vary and should be taken into account when planning.

The trail includes a restored, authentic machine-gun bunker on the Hrb hill. A battle reenactment also recalled the historical events: at the reenactment of the fighting around Hrb on 14 September 2024, the programme began with ceremonies at the Slovak National Uprising monument and the monument to Ján Kutlík, followed by the battle reenactment.

Local history and events

The village has a pseudo-Gothic bell tower dating from the second half of the 19th century. An old mill is located near the railway station.

Another event venue is Lesík, a site surrounded by nature for cultural and social events, about 500 metres from the village. It has been used for these purposes for more than 80 years. It has an amphitheatre, an area for cooking goulash, a spectator area and the covered Žliabok spring. As individual facilities may change, check their current condition before your visit. Past events at Lesík have included dances, summer festivals, theatre performances, sporting events and firefighting competitions.

The “Jednou stopou do lesíka” motorcycle gathering was also held at Lesík. The seventh edition took place in 2022; its programme included concerts, competitions, a raffle and a commemorative bonfire. If you would like to include the gathering in your travel plans, check the dates of future editions.

Regional cuisine and festival culture

The 2024 Haluške festival featured a folklore programme, a cooking competition, traditional dishes and local specialities. At Držkobranie, participants prepared tripe using whole tripe. A woman, a man and a child from the audience were also able to help judge the dishes. These details give an idea of how cooking competitions and audience participation came together at the respective editions.

At the 2025 community pig slaughter, traditional dishes were served, including lung soup, cabbage soup, liver, a blood-based speciality prepared in the regional style, and homemade sausages.
