Hnúšťa combines a mining history, historic architecture and a striking location in a basin at the foot of the Stolické vrchy mountains. In the town center, the Klenovská and Tisovská Rimava rivers join to form the Rimava. During your stay, you can focus on museums and architectural monuments, or turn your attention to the landscape and its history.

Mining history and exhibitions

The Hnúšťa Mining Museum presents the history of mining in the town and region. A visit includes a short entry into a disused section of a mine that is still in operation. Visitors cover 600 meters in the underground section; prior arrangements may be required. Alongside the region’s history, the visit offers an insight into a specific part of the mine.

Another museum visit takes you to the Petrivaldský Villa, a two-storey Neoclassical building dating from around 1830. Since 1998, it has been a national cultural monument, listed under number 11262. The villa has an interactive exhibition about Janko Francisci-Rimavský and Matej Hrebenda, as well as an exhibition on the development of the book. The exhibitions are open on weekdays. At weekends, visits are possible only by prior arrangement and subject to the availability of a guide.

Art, churches and historic buildings

Vojtech Stašík’s 1957 sgraffito “Detvanec” is considered the largest sgraffito in Slovakia. The dates associated with the churches reflect different periods in the town’s history: the Neoclassical Roman Catholic church dates from 1802, while the first chapel was built as early as 1788. The Neoclassical Evangelical church dates from 1808 and stands on the site of an older church with a cemetery dating from the early 14th century.

In the Maša district stands the Mašiansky Bridge, one of two surviving single-arch stone bridges dating from around 1765. A more recent structure covers the bridge. Together with the churches, the villa and the sgraffito, it illustrates the variety of historic buildings and artworks in Hnúšťa.

The basin landscape and historic routes

The Hnúšťa Basin lies at the foot of the Stolické vrchy mountains and is bordered by the elevations of Sinec, Ostrá, Štepov vrch, Brandzová and Brezina. In the town center, the Klenovská and Tisovská Rimava rivers meet to form the Rimava. Both the surrounding heights and the river course help orient visitors in the area.

The section of the Márie Széchy educational trail within the cadastral area of Hnúšťa follows the historic road between Fiľakovo and Muráň castles, dating from 1644. The town established this section of the trail in 2021. This historic route is a distinct point of interest for visitors interested in the history of regional routes; it offers an additional perspective on the past, separate from the town’s museums and architectural monuments.

Leisure activities and practical planning

The outdoor swimming pool in Hnúšťa has a 25-meter-long swimming pool with a depth of 1 to 1.8 meters. There is also a 10 × 10 meter children’s pool with a small slide. The pool is open; check seasonal availability before your trip.

The Hnúšťa Tourist Information Center rents out two electric bikes, three cross-country bikes and a children’s bike trailer. Helmets and reflective gear are also available for the rented bikes. The information center also offers reservations for the town’s museums, information about cultural, social and tourist activities in Hnúšťa and the surrounding area, and tips for hiking and cycling trips. If you are planning a bike trip, check availability and prices in advance.
