The 20-metre-high Bystrý potok waterfall, fourteen Stations of the Cross and intricately decorated wooden crosses show different sides of Hriňová. There are also nature trails and an exhibition about Professor Štefan Nosáľ, who was born in the town. Nature, religious heritage and local culture offer different ways to explore Hriňová as a destination.

Waterfall and landscape

The Bystrý potok waterfall is a national natural monument in the cadastral area of the town of Hriňová; its waterfall edge is 20 metres high. Panoramic views in Hriňová reveal the Hriňovské lazy, surrounding valleys, fields and mountains. In 2015, a proposal was made to extend the transition zone of the Poľana Biosphere Reserve to include the so-called hriňovské lazy.

Nature trails with different destinations

When planning, keep in mind the destinations with similar-sounding names: the trail to the Bystrô waterfall is 3.5 km long and has nine information panels. The trail from Hriňová to the Bystrý potok waterfall passes through Bystré and Vrátka, following the valley along the Bystrý potok to the waterfall. This route is suitable for families with children; route conditions and suitability may change, so check both before your visit. The Bystrô trail is described by its length and panels, while the route to Bystrý potok is described by its course and suitability for families.

Religious heritage and woodcarving

The Stations of the Cross in Hriňová comprise fourteen stations. The twelfth station consists of three crosses above the town centre. Wooden crosses, found mainly near Stations of the Cross, bear witness to the skill of local carvers. They are made mostly of oak and richly decorated with ornamental, sacred, Old Slavic, floral and figurative motifs.

The Church of St. Peter and Paul was consecrated by Bishop Dr. Andrej Škrábik on 8 September 1947, marking its completion. The date links the consecration and completion in a specific historical event in the town.

Exhibition and practical information

The Hriňovská drevenica Štefana Nosáľa opened to the public on 16 August 2019. Its exhibition is primarily dedicated to Professor Štefan Nosáľ (1927–2017), who was born in Hriňová and was the artistic director of the Lúčnica ensemble. To arrange a visit, contact the Hriňová Tourist Information Centre and confirm whether a visit is possible on your chosen date.

The town’s annual cultural programme includes the Gazdovanie na Hriňovských lazoch event in August. Check the dates for your travel year if you would like to plan your stay around this event. The Hriňová Tourist Information Centre sells maps and publications about Hriňová and Podpoľanie; ask about the current selection if these materials are important to your planning.

The Javorinka tourist shelter is open to everyone around the clock, free of charge. Check access conditions before your visit.
