Detva offers a range of experiences for a stay: traditional folk culture, local history, and natural attractions in the surrounding area. When planning, it is worth considering cultural events, the museum, and the landscape separately. A festival visit depends on the calendar, the exhibitions offer insights into music and regional culture, and the natural monuments focus on geological features and hiking trails.

Folk culture with its own calendar

Detva has hosted the Folklórne slávnosti pod Poľanou since 1966. The festival is rooted in traditional folk culture and takes place annually on the second weekend in July. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the specific event dates for your travel year. This lets you plan your festival visit as a separate occasion rather than treating it as the same as a museum visit or a walk in the surrounding area.

The Fujara is also closely associated with Detva’s traditional folk culture. In 2005, it was added to the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The festival and the instrument offer two different ways to engage with this tradition: one is an annual event, the other an instrument with its own cultural significance.

Museum and historical traces

At the Podpolianske Museum, the “Instrumentum Excellens FSP Detva” exhibition showcases 118 folk musical instruments by 47 makers from Slovakia. The permanent exhibition on Slovak folk musical instruments includes educational and interactive features. Another permanent exhibition, “Ovce moje, ovce...,” introduces visitors to Vlach culture in the Podpoľanie region. The museum thus brings together the culture of musical instruments and regional cultural history.

The museum is located in the historic part of Detva, in a former municipal office building. It offers year-round cultural and educational activities for visitors of all ages, as well as creative art workshops with a regional character. So in addition to the exhibitions, there are activities visitors can take part in; you can check in advance which ones are available on your travel dates.

Other historical themes offer different perspectives: the Roman Catholic Church of St. Francis of Assisi was built in 1803–1805 and is a protected cultural monument. The historic Vagač House is where Slovakia’s first bryndza cheese dairy was founded in the 19th century. Architectural history and the story of a regional food thus complement the insights into music and folk culture.

City activities and guided tours

The Detva Tourist Information Centre offers the interactive game “Magická cesta ku klenotom Detvy.” Visitors explore the city through tasks, puzzles, and entertaining stops. A tourist experience package combines visits to places of interest with tastings of regional products and the opportunity to take part in creative workshops with craftspeople. The centre’s guided tours take visitors around the city and its surroundings, including Kalamárka and Poľana; they are offered in Slovak, English, and French.

There are several ways to explore: independently, with interactive tasks; through a package combining sightseeing and regional experiences; or on a guided tour. If a particular activity is a deciding factor for your trip, check its availability and specific dates in advance.

Natural monuments and trails

Near Detva, north of the city, lies the Kalamárka Natural Monument, which is visited by tourists and serves as an educational resource for specialist study. The red-marked Rudná magistrála and the Kalamárka nature trail lead from Detva to this natural monument. Both routes therefore have the same destination; they differ in their markings and in their character as a hiking route and a nature trail, respectively.

Nearby Melichova skala, above the settlement of Skliarovo, offers a different landscape. The column-shaped rock is the preserved remnant of the front of a lava flow and features forms created by flowing lava. A blue-marked hiking trail runs around the rock. When choosing a natural attraction, you can therefore distinguish between Kalamárka, with its educational function, and the distinctive rock formation of Melichova skala.

Getting around locally

Detva’s sights are accessible on foot, by car, by bus, or by bicycle via local roads, marked cycle routes, and marked hiking trails. The guided tours offered by the Tourist Information Centre provide another way to discover the city and its surroundings. The option that suits your stay depends on whether you prefer to plan your visits yourself or join a guided tour.
