At the Podpoľanie Museum in Detva, the “Instrumentum Excellens” exhibition presents Slovak folk musical instruments with interactive and educational elements. In the museum courtyard, authentic carved wooden crosses from Detva, featuring traditional motifs from the Podpoľanie region, are on display. Another exhibition, “Ovce moje, ovce…” (“My sheep, my sheep…”), explores shepherding and Wallachian traditions, sheep farming, milk production and the making of bryndza in Podpoľanie. The museum thus brings together music, woodcarving and the history of regional food through a range of exhibition themes.
Culture, Crafts and History
The Vagač House in Detva is also connected with the history of bryndza: Slovakia’s first bryndza cheese dairy was established there in the 19th century. TIK Detva offers an experience package combining visits to Detva’s sights with tastings of regional products and creative workshops with traditional craftspeople. Guided tours cover the town and its surroundings, including Kalamárka and Poľana. The guide is certified, and tours are available in Slovak, English or French; advance booking is required.
Kalamárka in Detva preserves the remains of fortifications and a water cistern. Poľana is also included among the destinations on guided tours. The mountain range is Slovakia’s highest and best-preserved volcanic mountain range; its caldera is about six kilometres wide and 800 metres deep. The tours therefore take in both archaeological traces and a geological landscape.
Recurring events include the Folklórne slávnosti pod Poľanou festival, held every year in Detva and attracting many visitors. Around 1,500 performers take part in the festival. Every year, the Dni mesta Detva commemorates the historic partisan mobilization. These events have different focuses: the festival is dedicated to folklore, while the Dni mesta Detva keeps the memory of a historic event alive.
Rock Formations and Trails
Melichova skala, a protected natural monument, lies above Skliarovo. The column-shaped rock formation, about 30 metres high, is a remnant of the front of a lava flow. It can be reached via a hiking trail from the Skliarovo district, at the Murínovci bus stop. The site combines a distinctive landscape feature with a geological origin: the rock is not simply a hill, but part of the remains of a lava flow.
In Detvianska Huta, the Mikuláš Esterházy educational trail is about five kilometres long. It can be explored on foot or by bicycle; some sections are also accessible by car. Several stops offer panoramic views of Poľana, the Kremnica Mountains and part of the Štiavnica Mountains. Another educational trail in Detvianska Huta is called “Za cestou skla” (“Along the Glass Road”).
There are numerous hiking and cycling trails around Košútka Park. In summer, the park becomes an adventure park with a 455-metre zipline and a downhill cycling track. As these activities are seasonal, check their availability before travelling. The marked cycle route network in the Detva area includes the Rudohorská cyklomagistrála, the Hontianská cyklomagistrála, the Novohradská cyklomagistrála and the Okruh okolo Poľany. Check the signage and conditions locally.
Another cultural monument in Detva District is Vígľaš Castle in the municipality of Vígľaš. Together with its exhibitions, commemorative traditions, and landscape and trail attractions, it shows how varied a stay in Detva District can be.
