Arilje offers several distinct reasons to visit: medieval religious history, a legat containing personal belongings and written records, areas by the water, and paths around Klokoč. You can choose your focus according to your interests—for example, a fresco, beach areas with different features, or a route through woodland and open spaces. When choosing accommodation, it helps to decide first which of these aspects of Arilje matter to your trip.
Culture: Church and Literary Legat
St Achillius Church in Arilje dates from the 13th century and was founded by the Serbian King Dragutin Nemanjić. Its best-known fresco depicts the Archangel Gabriel and is known as “The Blue Angel.” The story of its origins and its subject offer two different points of entry: the royal foundation places the building in its historical period, while the fresco focuses attention on a single work.
The Dobrilo Nenadić Legat offers a different perspective. It opened on 28 May 2022 at the Arilje Tourist Information Centre. The legat includes the writer’s living room, personal belongings and desk, as well as his archive and correspondence with other prominent writers. In this way, traces of everyday life sit alongside work materials and written exchanges. Unlike the church, this cultural theme focuses on a writer’s personal world; the two subjects can be explored as separate interests or as complementary aspects of Arilje’s cultural heritage.
By the Water: Beach Areas and River Course
Gradska plaža can be reached on foot from the centre of Arilje. Its shallow section has concrete steps and play equipment for children, while the deeper section is suitable for swimming. This gives you two practical questions to consider when choosing your destination for the day: Should you focus on the equipped shallow-water area or the deeper swimming area, and does the walk from the centre fit into your plans?
The Rzav also shapes the area’s geography: several beaches lie along it before the river reaches Arilje. In Arilje, the Rzav flows through the town and joins the Moravica there. This makes it possible to distinguish between the river beaches upstream of the town and the confluence in Arilje as two separate geographical points of reference.
Klokoč: Cycling and Walking Trails
A 4 km cycling trail lies on Mount Klokoč above Arilje. The circular walking and cycling trail passes through beech forest; raspberry plantations grow in the clearings, with benches nearby. The area around the Klokoč trail is 4 km from the centre of Arilje. The two 4 km figures describe different things: the length of the cycling trail and the distance of the trail area from the town centre. This distinction helps you compare the route and its location when weighing outdoor activities against the cultural or beach themes.
The two landscape experiences are clearly different: at Gradska plaža, depth, facilities and swimming are key; at Klokoč, the focus is on a trail through beech forest, clearings and resting spots.
