Žagubica offers two distinct perspectives on a trip: nature by the water and the cultural themes of Homolje. At Vrelo Mlave, the focus is on walks along landscaped banks and breaks on wooded slopes. The Zavičajni muzej Homolja offers a different emphasis, with permanent exhibitions, cultural events and workshops. This lets you choose between landscapes and the river on the one hand, and the museum, customs and culinary themes on the other, according to your interests.

The spring and river as natural attractions

Vrelo Mlave is protected as a Category I natural monument; the 2023 management plan confirms this protection status. Visitors can walk along the landscaped banks and rest on the wooded slopes around the spring. This offers two different options: spending time by the water or taking a break on a wooded slope.

The Mlava rises at Žagubičko vrelo and first flows 11.5 km through the Žagubica basin. These details indicate both its source and the river’s initial stretch through the basin. As it flows through Homolje, the Mlava partly retains the characteristics of a clean mountain river. Recreational and leisure attractions along this course include springs, gorges, fishponds, recreation areas and sport fishing. The river’s course through the Žagubica basin and the broader recreational and leisure attractions in Homolje offer two different geographical perspectives.

Museum, events and traditions

The Zavičajni muzej Homolja in Žagubica has three permanent exhibitions. The museum also organizes cultural events and various workshops for children and young people. Its permanent exhibitions are complemented by events and workshops, the latter extending its cultural focus with activities specifically for young people.

The museum lists its visiting hours as Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 16:00. Organized groups can also visit outside these hours by reservation. Check the visiting hours before your visit.

The Sabor “Vrela Homolja” focuses on old customs and crafts, as well as old songs and dances from Homolje. The program also includes honey, cheese, lamb, trout, rakija and products made from medicinal plants. Cultural expressions and food thus come together in the program: the Sabor offers a different thematic focus from the museum’s permanent exhibitions and workshops. When planning a visit to the museum and the Sabor, keep their different scheduling requirements in mind: the museum has the visiting hours listed above, while organized groups can visit outside those hours by reservation. For the Sabor, it is a good idea to check the event date before travelling. This will help you coordinate the cultural events in advance.
