Frescoes from the painted tombs of Viminacium are among the notable exhibits at the National Museum of Požarevac. The display may change. Viminacium itself preserves archaeological remains, including an amphitheatre and Roman baths. This means you encounter the ancient heritage both in the finds and in the surviving buildings.

Archaeological Sites and Fortifications

Another archaeological site is Kraku lu Jordan, dating from the 3rd century AD. It is located in the area of the village of Brodica, at the confluence of the Brodica and Pek rivers. This precise location connects a visit with a specific landscape setting without conflating the site with other archaeological places.

The fortresses also take different forms. Ram has an irregular pentagonal ground plan; alongside the keep stand four other towers. The complex also includes a nearby 15th-century caravanserai building. The medieval Golubac Fortress dates from the 14th century and stands on a steep, rocky cliff on the right bank of the Danube. It can be reached by land or river; specific transport conditions may change.

Monasteries, History and Routes

Gornjak Monastery was founded in 1378 by Prince Lazar. It lies at the entrance to the Gornjačka Gorge. The monastery includes a church dedicated to the Presentation of the Virgin Mary and the hermitage of Grigorije Sinait, set in the rocks. The combination of monastic buildings and a rock hermitage reveals different forms of religious architecture here.

Tumane Monastery lies at the foot of the Golubac Mountains, surrounded by forest on the left bank of the Tumane River. The earliest surviving records of the monastery date from the 16th century. The hermitage of Saint Zosim is about one kilometre away. The monastery holds gatherings every year, attended by many believers. For overnight stays in the monastic guesthouse, a reservation notice dated 4 June 2025 names the monastery’s official website as the booking channel. Check the notice again before your trip.

Active exploration is also part of the experience: a hiking and mountain trail in Kučevo links the caves near Ravnište and Ceremošnja via Veliki Štubej. As trail conditions may change, it is advisable to check them before setting out. Ceremošnja Cave itself has spacious halls with stalactites, stalagmites and other cave formations. Those interested in cycling can find a different kind of route on the former asphalt road between Donji Milanovac, Golubac and Belgrade. Since the Đerdap motorway was built, it has seen little traffic.

Springs, Caves and Silver Lake

Near Žagubica, Vrelo Mlave lies below the northern slopes of Beljanica. The spring formed as an apparently small lake in a flooded doline at an altitude of 314 metres. Visitors can walk along its paved banks and relax on the wooded slopes around the spring. Visiting a cave, walking beside the water and taking a break on a wooded slope each appeal to different interests.

Silver Lake is 14 kilometres long and 300 metres wide. It is suitable for bathing, swimming and a range of water sports. An aquapark adds to the lakeside attractions, with more than five swimming pools and slides for children and adults. A 2.7-kilometre path leads from the lakeshore to Veliko Gradište. Each measurement describes a different option: the lake as a large body of water, the path as a specific connection, and the aquapark as a place with pools and slides.

There is a functional landing stage on the Danube near Silver Lake for arriving by boat. Restaurants near the lake serve freshly caught river fish with traditional side dishes, salads and a wide selection of wines. For a sporting challenge near Ždrelo, a 2025 publication mentions equipment and guides available for hire at the Gornjak via ferrata. Check availability before your trip.
