Petrovac na Mlavi brings together several specific attractions for a stay: the Zavičajni muzej displays archaeological finds and a multimedia account of the town’s history, while a protected church and the museum building itself are part of its architectural heritage. Petrovački park and the pedestrian zone add walking paths, a market, cafés and restaurants to the cultural offering. If you are travelling for an event, check the date of “Gulini dani” in advance.
Museum and protected architectural heritage
The Zavičajni muzej Petrovac na Mlavi is located in the town centre, in the building of the “Stare pošte”. Its permanent exhibition includes archaeological finds from the Neolithic site of “Belovode”, as well as a documentary and historical multimedia exhibition on the origins of Petrovac na Mlavi. Admission is free; as visitor arrangements may change, check the current conditions before your visit. The museum building itself is part of the unique architectural complex “Načelstva” and is protected as immovable cultural property.
The Crkva Svetog Vaznesenja in Petrovac is also protected as immovable cultural property and a cultural monument. It was built between 1866 and 1869. Its construction date and protected status provide two specific points of reference for understanding the town: one identifies the period in which it was built, while the other indicates the building’s protected status.
Park paths and pedestrian zone
Petrovački park stretches along the left bank of the Mlava, from the “upper bridge” on Jovana Šerbanovića Street to the town centre. The park has laid-out paths for walking and relaxation. The riverbank and paths give this part of a stay a different focus from the museum and church: here, it is about being active outdoors, while those are about exhibitions and protected buildings.
The pedestrian zone consists of a square and Bata Bulić Street, which is closed to car traffic. It starts at the square where a monument to the writer and painter Đura Jakšić stands. There are cafés and restaurants in the pedestrian zone. Wednesday is market day at Petrovac’s Green Market, located in the central part of town. If you plan to visit the market, check the day of the week locally. It is also worth checking the latest information if you have specific restaurant plans, as individual businesses may change.
Theatre and events
“Gulini dani” is a theatre festival established in 2010 in memory of actor Dragoljub Milosavljević Gula. It showcases the best performances by amateur theatres from Serbia and abroad. The festival takes place every year in the second half of March; as the date may change from year to year, check it before travelling. If theatre is a reason for choosing Petrovac, this period offers a seasonal point of reference, but not a fixed date.
Another type of event is the Dragutin Tomašević Memorial Race, which covers a 10.073-kilometre route from Bistrica to Petrovac. While “Gulini dani” is centred on theatre performances, the race is defined by its distance and its two endpoints.
