Veliko Gradište combines its location on the Danube with a distinct cultural profile. In the town centre stands the Church of the Holy Archangel Gabriel; the library and National Museum offer further insights into the cultural life of the municipality. Around the promenade and at nearby Silver Lake, there are also parking options and water-based activities. The town’s architectural history, cultural programmes and different types of beaches offer several ways to decide whether it is right for your trip.

Church, Library and Museum

The Church of the Holy Archangel Gabriel is located in the town centre. It was built in 1852 on the site of an older church dating from 1720. The two dates therefore refer to two successive church buildings at the same location: 1720 to the older building and 1852 to the one built later. The church’s façade is designed in the classicist style. Its location, building history and architectural style provide a tangible way to explore the history of the town.

The “Vuk Karadžić” National Library is the oldest cultural institution in the municipality of Veliko Gradište and hosts numerous cultural programmes throughout the year. At the National Museum of Veliko Gradište, the Pavle and Đorđe Đorđević bequest displays personal belongings of the two benefactors of Veliko Gradište. There are also changing exhibitions and gallery presentations throughout the year. The bequest focuses on personal belongings and their connection to the two benefactors; the exhibitions and galleries bring changing presentations to the museum.

The Danube, Cycling Route and Promenade

Veliko Gradište lies on the Danube, one of Europe’s most important waterways. The area is easily accessible by bicycle. The European route EuroVelo 6, one of the best-known cycling routes along the Danube, passes through the area. If you are considering travelling by bicycle, you can factor the route’s wider connection to the Danube into your plans; check local conditions before setting off.

Parking options are also relevant when getting your bearings around the promenade: there are several parking zones nearby, where all-day parking is available.

Silver Lake and Events

There are three developed types of beach around Silver Lake, near Veliko Gradište: pebble, grass and concrete. The different surfaces offer a straightforward guide to the beach areas. Also nearby, Aqua Park Silver Lake is located directly on the promenade. It has five pools of varying depths, as well as slides and water attractions for children and adults. It operates seasonally; check its operating schedule for the relevant period before travelling.

The traditional Narodni vašar takes place on 2 August. If you would like to plan your trip around this date, check the current programme in advance. This offers a different timing reference from the National Library’s year-round cultural programmes: the fair is associated with a specific date, while the library hosts numerous programmes throughout the year.

The history of the municipality also includes Ram Fortress, in the area of Veliko Gradište. It is the first typical military artillery fortress on the right bank of the Danube.
