One distinctive feature of Rast is its setting within Golija Nature Park. The entire cadastral municipality of Rast, in the area of the city of Novi Pazar, lies within the park; the included area is stated to cover a total of 5,891 hectares. This area is subject to a third-degree protection regime. Its location in Novi Pazar and within Golija Nature Park highlights two geographical levels: the municipal framework and the protected area. Rast can thus be viewed both as a specific place and as part of a larger natural landscape. For planning a trip, this context is a useful starting point: nature and local history offer two distinct yet complementary ways to explore the destination.

Headwaters, forests and pastureland

Rast lies below Golija, in the headwaters of the Kuzmičevski Potok. This stream is a tributary of the Dmitrova Reka, placing the local water system within a broader river network. Pastureland and forest lie above the village road. Odvraćenicko Polje on Golija is also counted among Rast’s forest and pasture areas. Studenac is a powerful spring in Rast. The headwaters of the Kuzmičevski Potok and Studenac are different water features: one refers to the source area of a stream, the other to a powerful spring in the village.

Golija as a natural landscape

The Golija area was designated as part of the international Emerald ecological network (RS0000030) because of its numerous plant and animal species of national and international importance, as well as to protect priority habitat types. It is also designated as an Important Plant Area (IPA), an internationally and nationally important bird area (RS029IBA), and a selected butterfly area (PBA 09). These protection and significance categories emphasize different aspects, ranging from the ecological network and habitat types to plants, birds and butterflies. For understanding Rast, the scale is important: these nature designations refer to Golija as a larger area.

The region’s waterways

Most of Golija’s flowing waters belong to the salmonid region. In the Studenica and Moravica catchments, as well as in those of other smaller tributaries, the waterways carry large volumes of water even during low-water periods; brown trout are predominant there. This information adds an overview of Golija’s waterways to the local orientation around Rast. In this way, the ecological classification of the region’s flowing waters and the local headwater setting of the Kuzmičevski Potok fit into a broader landscape context.

Local history across several periods

The old settlement of Rast was located in Stari Rast. A Turkish census list records Rast in 1455 under the name R’s, with the addition bosje. According to local tradition, Rast was settled by newcomers at the end of the 18th century. The 15th-century entry and the later account represent different historical layers: a dated form of the name on the one hand, and a local tradition about settlement on the other. Rast is also associated with a necropolis near Vražica.
