Landscape and Golija

Plešin combines a striking hillside setting with the landscape of Golija and a distinctive local history. The settlement lies on steep mountain slopes on both sides of the Plešinski Potok. Golija Nature Park, which includes Plešin, was designated a natural asset of exceptional importance and placed in the first protection category in 2001. During the summer months, gentle walks and mountain hikes in Golija offer opportunities to relax. For planning your trip, it is important to consider the different scales: these activities are part of the wider Golija area, while Plešin is shaped by its slopes, waterways, and local traditions. When looking for a hotel, you can decide whether the natural setting or local features should be the focus of your trip.

Forests, Meadows, and Waterways

There are larger and smaller areas of woodland around Plešin. An older description of the settlement says that pastures and meadows covered more land than cultivated fields. This means that wooded areas and open, agricultural land are among the landscape features of the area. The waterways also give the region its own character: their names reflect different connections to the settlement and to the Deževa.

A historical description of the settlement mentions numerous unnamed springs in Plešin and reports that residents used their water. If you are interested in these springs, check local conditions and water quality before using them. Near Dvorište, several strong springs form the Kučevski Potok. Below the hamlet of Banjska, which belongs to Plešin, the small mountain stream Banjska flows into the Deževa. The Kučevski Potok, along with the Plešinska and Banjska Reka, forms the Deževa River. The Plešinski Potok is associated with Plešin’s hillside setting; in contrast, the Kučevski Potok, Plešinska Reka, and Banjska Reka are named as tributaries forming the Deževa.

Place Names and Traditions

Local names also offer a way to explore the settlement’s history. The hill above the hamlet of Dvorište is called Šanac. Local tradition links it to Karađorđe: he is said to have dug a trench there while travelling to Novi Pazar. This remains a local tradition, not a confirmed account of a military-historical event.

Plešin is home to the ruins of an old church that has not served its original purpose for a long time. If you would like to include the ruins in your travel plans, check locally whether access is possible. Another local feature is linguistic: livestock barns are called “sibare” in Plešin. The term offers a concrete connection to the area’s settlement and agricultural history.
