The Ibar, the spa history and therapies using healing water give Mataruška Banja a distinctive character. When planning your visit, you can look at the town from two perspectives: through its development as a spa resort and through the river landscape that shapes its appearance.
Spa History and Healing Water
According to the traditional dating, spa treatments began on July 13, 1899. During the interwar period, Mataruška Banja developed into a climatic spa resort for rest and recovery. Another historical milestone came in 1951: the opening of the winter bath made spa operations possible in winter as well. These dates mark different stages in the spa resort’s development.
Today, two specialized medical facilities in Mataruška Banja offer spa treatments and therapies using healing water. A therapy page from the Agens Specialist Hospital, dated May 1, 2023, describes hydrotherapy, including a therapeutic pool for hydrokinesis. The long spa tradition and a specific insight into the therapies described are thus presented side by side.
The Ibar, the Park and the Townscape
The Ibar flows through the center of Mataruška Banja and alongside a park. The spa resort landscape also includes a landscaped riverside promenade and sculptures in the park. A suspension bridge over the Ibar is a distinctive landmark of the town. The river, park and bridge thus add recognizable natural and architectural features to the picture of the spa resort.
Those interested in the history of the townscape will find that Mataruška Banja’s history includes not only the development of spa operations but also a building history shaped by urban and development planning. This history includes the original urban and development plan, as well as architectural designs for bathhouses, hotels and villas. These plans offer another historical perspective on the spa resort’s development.
Getting There and Routes at the Confluence
Mataruška Banja can be reached via the Belgrade–Kraljevo trunk road and is connected to the Belgrade–Kraljevo–Skopje railway line. This allows you to plan your journey using your preferred connection. If travelling by train, it is advisable to check the current timetable.
A separate set of directions covers the routes at the confluence of the Crna reka and the Ibar. From the bus station in Mataruška Banja, the route to the start of these trails consists of 4.6 km of paved road followed by 2.4 km of unpaved road. The change in road surface is relevant for planning; check the condition in advance, as surfaces can change. Together, the two sections cover 7 km to the start of the trails; 2.4 km of this is unpaved. The paved section is 2.2 km longer than the unpaved section.
These questions can help you get a sense of Mataruška Banja, both thematically and practically, as you plan your stay.
