Raška’s cultural history can be explored through a wide range of themes: the construction history of the Kameni most over the Ibar, a memorial room dedicated to Serbian history, and long-standing festivals. Protected architecture and religious customs are also part of the city’s character. If you would like to focus your stay on culture, these specific highlights can help you match your travel dates to your interests.

A Bridge and Wartime History in One Structure

The Kameni most over the Ibar was built between 1893 and 1895 at the site of an earlier ferry crossing. It was partially destroyed during the occupation attack of 1915 and was not restored to its original condition until 1925. The bridge’s history thus links the transition from ferry crossing to built structure with its later destruction and restoration. These three dates tell different parts of its history without confusing the construction period with the reconstruction.

Memorial Room and Cultural Monuments

The memorial room “Raška – ratna prestonica Kraljevine Srbije 1915” is located in the building of the “Gradac” Center for Culture, Education and Information in Raška. Its main exhibition covers the stay of the Serbian government and Crown Prince Aleksandar Karađorđević in the city. The materials on display include meeting minutes and copies of documents, accounts from participants, photographs of the people involved, and objects from that period. A separate section is dedicated to Milunka Savić: it features reprints of her photographs, her decorations and personal items, as well as the uniform she fought in. The memorial room thus focuses both on political events and on the story of an individual fighter.

The current city library building, the old Kursulić House, is designated as a cultural monument for its historical and cultural value. It is protected by the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments in Kraljevo and has been listed in the Register of Immovable Cultural Assets since 1981. Kuća Kursulića is among the first buildings constructed in the style of Central European bourgeois architecture; houses in cities beyond the Sava and Danube served as models. The library and the history of the architecture refer to the same building, but to different aspects of its significance.

The Saborna crkva Sv. Arhangela Gavrila is located in the center of Raška. Mali Spasovdan, the city’s patron saint’s day celebration, is observed there. The statue of Archbishop Danilo II stands in the square in front of the House of Culture and cinema. These named places provide distinct focal points for culture and religious customs within the city.

Festivals as Date Anchors

The traditional “Vašar u Raški” is one of Serbia’s oldest fairs; the first organized fair was held in 1860. Every year on October 14, Raška welcomes numerous traders and visitors from various parts of Serbia for the Pokrova Presvete Bogorodice festival. The 2023 fair was also described as an event where visitors could sample exhibitors’ specialties and buy homemade products. This culinary element gives visitors an opportunity to discover the exhibitors’ produce and dishes as part of the fair.

Since 2000, the Raške Spiritual Festivities have awarded the “Stefan Prvovenčani” prize for an outstanding contribution to Serbian culture. A program announcement dated August 13, 2024, describes the international artists’ colony “Akademija Jelena Anžujska” as the first part of the program. The main part of the event was then scheduled to take place from August 15 to 19, opening with an exhibition of works created at the artists’ colony. If you plan to time your trip around these festivities, check the current dates and the program for the relevant year in advance.

October 14 is the annual reference date for the fair, while the program sequence described for the Spiritual Festivities is tied to a 2024 announcement. If you are looking for a hotel in Raška, these different date references may help you choose when to travel.
