For those who want to get to know Kruševac through its history and art, the archaeological park “Lazarev grad” offers a tangible starting point: the Narodni muzej Kruševac is also located there. Other facets of the city are reflected in a 14th-century church, monuments and art collections. Bagdala adds a miniature park, walks and recreational sports to the mix. This makes it possible to choose where to stay according to your interests, without reducing all the sites to a single theme.
Lazarev grad and the history of Kruševac
Knez Lazar built his capital on the site of what is now the archaeological park “Lazarev grad,” apparently in 1371. The complex preserves the ruins of the main tower, part of the northern fortification wall and traces of other walls within the grounds. Its buildings include a court church, a palace and a stable. The Narodni muzej is located inside the park; its collection comprises around 23,000 objects spanning more than six millennia.
The Lazarica Church also reflects the history of the place. It was built in 1375 or 1376 to mark the birth of Despot Stefan, Prince Lazar’s firstborn son. The Monument to the Kosovo Heroes is considered a symbol of Kruševac and the most monumental work of national sculpture from the beginning of the 20th century. The town hall houses the Mosaic Hall, a unique decorative ensemble of contemporary Serbian art dedicated to Moravian Serbia.
Despot Stefan Square offers another point of reference in the cityscape: the monument to Princess Milica stands there, and the square leads from the town hall towards the Kruševac fortress. The Galerija Milića od Mačve is on Ulica cara Lazara, close to the archaeological park. These places offer different perspectives—from medieval history and sculpture to contemporary art.
Museum and art collections
At the Narodni muzej, an expansive historical range comes together with a clearly defined location: the museum has around 23,000 objects spanning more than six millennia of history and is located inside “Lazarev grad.” The museum offers guided tours in Serbian and English. If you are planning a tour, confirm the arrangements before your trip.
A different, more narrowly focused collection is Milić od Mačve’s “Kosovo prvi prag Srbije” bequest. Since 2008, it has belonged to the Kulturni centar Kruševac and comprises 120 original paintings dedicated to the Kosovo myth and Serbian history and tradition. Individual works can be loaned for exhibitions. The museum collection and the bequest therefore differ in size and focus: one is a collection spanning more than six millennia, while the other is a group of paintings on specific historical and cultural themes.
Bagdala, miniatures and events
Bagdala is home to the “Srbija” miniature park, whose shape corresponds to the territory of Serbia. It features five “rivers,” ten “cities” and initially ten miniature monasteries; the park opened on Vidovdan in 2019. Bagdala Park also offers a landscaped area for walks and recreational sports. The annual “Kruševac kroz oblake” balloon festival is also held on Bagdala. Check the dates for the current edition before your trip.
The three-day “Viteški megdan” festival takes place in “Lazarev grad” in the run-up to Vidovdan. If you would like to plan your stay around it, check the current programme in advance. The two events differ in location and format: the balloon festival is held on Bagdala, while “Viteški megdan” takes place in the historic complex.
Other places to visit and getting there
The “Šarengrad” amusement park covers 1.5 hectares and is aimed primarily at young visitors and their companions. Its attractions include 20 dinosaur replicas. Bilingual signs in front of each replica provide information about the fossil’s name, period, discovery site and dimensions. As the exhibition may change, check the current visitor information before your visit.
For travel to Kruševac, the city is connected to the Belgrade–Bar railway line via its train station; check current train services before your trip. The city is 27 km from the E 75 motorway. This information helps you assess your travel options without presuming a particular connection or further arrangements.
