The Fontana vina stands in the main square of Aleksandrovac. Built in 1967, it is shaped like a wine barrel with a capacity of 10,000 liters. Another connection to wine can be found in a historic wine cellar, which houses the Museum of Viticulture and Winemaking. There is also an extensive collection at the Župa Homeland Museum, as well as archaeological and medieval themes in the surrounding area. If wine and cultural history are important factors in choosing your destination, Aleksandrovac offers several distinct points of interest.
Wine Between the Square and the Cellar
The Museum of Viticulture and Winemaking is housed in a historic wine cellar belonging to the agricultural school. The cellar was built in 1924, and the Fontana vina in 1967. The dates mark different points in time: here, a cellar building; there, a barrel-shaped fountain in the main square. In Aleksandrovac, wine is represented both by a historic building and by a distinctive structure in town.
The Collection and Vinča Sites
The Župa Homeland Museum is located in the protected heritage home of Priest Marko in Aleksandrovac. Its ethnographic, archaeological, and historical collection comprises more than 3,000 objects. Alongside the museum devoted specifically to viticulture and winemaking, there is therefore a broader-ranging local history museum. Its collections offer different ways to explore the area's history and culture.
The archaeological exhibits include Neolithic statues from the Vinča period, found at Vitkovačko polje. The field is in the surrounding area, four kilometers from Aleksandrovac, and was one of the most important settlement areas of the Vinča culture in the Balkans. It has been protected by the state since 1969. It is worth distinguishing the two when considering the subject: the statues preserved in the museum point to the findspot, while the field itself was a settlement area of the Vinča culture.
A Medieval Perspective
Koznik offers a different historical focus. The medieval fortress lies in the surrounding area at an elevation of more than 900 meters above sea level and overlooks Aleksandrovac-Župa. Together with Vitkovačko polje, it provides a clear contrast in periods: the focus at the field is the Vinča culture, while Koznik is a medieval fortress. This makes it possible to distinguish between two different historical themes in the area.
Cycling Routes with Different Itineraries
Cycling is another possible focus. The circular cycling route “Borje–Latkovac–Aleksandrovac” starts in the village of Borje near the center of Aleksandrovac and passes through the village of Laktovac and the village of Starci before reaching Aleksandrovac. Its circular layout and the named places give the route a clearly defined itinerary. The Museum of Viticulture and Winemaking in Aleksandrovac is a reference point for a green cycling route. The route descriptions therefore differ: one emphasizes the circular route and villages, while the other is linked to the wine museum. Check the itinerary before your ride, as it may change when the route is revised.
