Part of Koracica lies within the protected Kosmaj Nature Area. Hiking and cultural heritage can be explored through two specific points of reference: the Kosmaj trail network and Pavlovac Monastery, which the Biseri Kosmaja trail passes by.

Protected Landscape on Kosmaj

The Kosmaj Nature Area extends across parts of the municipalities of Mladenovac and Sopot and covers a total of 3,514.50 hectares. Its conservation aims include scenic landscapes, the quality of the forests, the diversity of plant and animal life, the purity of the water and air, and valuable cultural heritage and its surroundings. Nature and culture are therefore both part of the area’s conservation goals.

More than 70 percent of Kosmaj is covered by forest vegetation, with beech and oak forests predominating. This forest cover complements the other conservation aims and gives the landscape a distinct character.

Hiking Trails and Tour Planning

Kosmaj has about 50 kilometres of hiking trails. The mountaineering club GREBEN marked them in mid-2023 together with the Municipality of Mladenovac. The approximate total length describes the hiking trail network; Biseri Kosmaja is a specifically named trail with its own starting point and route.

Biseri Kosmaja begins in Petkajski kraj, a neighbourhood of Koracica, and passes by Pavlovac Monastery. To reach the starting point for this hike, take the route from the Mladenovac motorway exit via Kosmaj and onward to Koracica. The trail thus connects a starting point in the village with a cultural point of reference, without guaranteeing access to the monastery.

The hiking trails on Kosmaj are described as easy and considered suitable for beginners. Weather and personal circumstances can affect the difficulty. One of the trails has a wooden viewpoint offering a beautiful view of the entire area. Check which trail the viewpoint is on before setting out.

Pavlovac Monastery and History

Pavlovac Monastery has been largely restored following extensive archaeological and conservation work. It lies on the Biseri Kosmaja trail, making it a specific point of reference if you want to include hiking and cultural history in your plans.

According to historical accounts, Patriarch Arsenije Čarnojević held one of his last liturgies in Pavlovac in 1690, before leaving with the people for Hungary. The date places the account in its historical context; it adds a story associated with the site to the monastery’s relevance for hikers today.
