Belgrade lies at the confluence of the Sava and Danube. The confluence is below Kalemegdan and at the foot of Belgrade Fortress, near Kula Nebojša. The city is also considered a gateway to the Balkans and an entrance to Central Europe. Belgrade Fortress has around 2,000 years of history and encompasses Roman, medieval and modern layers of an artillery fortress. Its complex covers just under 60 hectares and consists of the Upper Town, Lower Town and Kalemegdan Park.
Riverside setting and history
At Belgrade Waterfront, long riverside promenades invite you to enjoy leisurely walks. The Belgrade Tower offers a different perspective: it has an observation deck with 360-degree panoramic views. These two options offer different ways to spend time outdoors—a peaceful walk by the water or a view of the city from above.
In 2015, the city of Belgrade designated Topčider Park a natural monument.
Museums and architectural heritage
The National Museum’s permanent exhibition spans from the Palaeolithic period to 20th-century art. It covers three levels and 5,000 square metres of exhibition space. The Nikola Tesla Museum preserves Nikola Tesla’s original personal effects, making it the only museum to do so. Prince Miloš’s Residence combines Balkan and Oriental styles. These places offer different ways to explore Belgrade’s cultural history: from a wide-ranging exhibition and Tesla’s personal legacy to a blend of architectural styles.
The memorial complex associated with Josip Broz Tito historically comprised ten buildings and a sculpture park. A guided visit to the Royal Compound in Dedinje has a set duration: the two-hour tour, led by professional guides, takes you through the salons of the Royal Palace and the White Palace. Allow for this as a separate item in your itinerary.
Walks, cycling and waterside activities
On Ada Ciganlija, an 11.2-kilometre cycling route runs around Savsko jezero. Check the route conditions locally before setting off. Savsko jezero is used for water sports and recreation and has hosted hundreds of national, European and world water sports championships. Cycling, water sports and recreation therefore represent different ways to make the area part of your stay.
Various cultural activities can be organised at Jevremovac Botanical Garden during the summer months. If you would like to include such events in your plans, check the current programme before your trip. Belgrade Zoo is home to more than 2,000 animals from 200 species across its current grounds. This scale adds a distinct place to visit alongside the museum and architecture themes.
Finding a hotel to suit your priorities
When looking for hotels in Belgrade, you can first decide which themes you want to shape your stay: the fortress and museums, walks and views, or activities at Savsko jezero. This lets you choose based on the experiences you actually want to include, rather than assuming a single set itinerary from the city’s many options.
