Avala Hiking Trail 5 connects Beli Potok with a clearly identified destination at the summit of Avala: the Monument to the Unknown Hero.
Hiking to Avala
The trail begins at the “Beli Potok Centar” bus stop and ends at an elevation of 506 m at the Monument to the Unknown Hero on the summit of Avala. The monument is a mausoleum honoring a Serbian soldier who fell there in 1915 during the First World War.
Avala Hiking Trail 4 also starts at the same bus stop, at an elevation of 233 m. The elevations refer to different points: for Trail 4, the starting elevation is given; for Trail 5, it is the elevation of the destination at the monument. A well-maintained path leads to the monument; check current trail conditions before setting out.
Church and memorial sites
The Church of Saint Mary Magdalene was built in 1883 through voluntary contributions and the work of local villagers. It is a single-nave building in the Raška School style, with a three-sided apse. “Single-nave” describes a building with one main nave; the three-sided apse describes the shape of the architectural end. The plan type and apse can therefore be considered two distinct features of the church.
A memorial to soldiers from the period 1912–1918 stands in the churchyard of the Church of Saint Mary Magdalene. Beli Potok is also the birthplace of Vasa Čarapić. A monument in the area commemorates him, the commander in the First Serbian Uprising. He is buried beside the northern wall of the church at Rakovica Monastery.
The cross from the site of the first Monument to the Unknown Hero now stands in a churchyard in Beli Potok. It is the only surviving remnant of that original monument. The memorial sites represent different commemorations: the mausoleum honors a single soldier who fell in 1915, while the monument to the fallen commemorates soldiers from the period 1912–1918.
