Rastište can be explored through several specific themes: Mramorje with its medieval cemeteries, the Rastište–Sedaljka cultural heritage complex, and the hiking trails in the area. The Derventa Gorge also helps orient visitors, as the road to Rastište passes through the canyon. Archaeological and religious cultural history thus go hand in hand with clear landscape and route planning.
Mramorje and the Medieval Stećci
The Mramorje archaeological site is located in Rastište, in Tara National Park. It consists of two medieval cemeteries with stećci dating from the 14th and 15th centuries. This clearly defines the time period of the complex: the focus is on medieval burial sites and stećci. Thirty-eight medieval tombstones have been preserved in the archaeological complex.
The Uroševine and Gajevi necropolises of Mramorje are jointly inscribed as a single unit on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The two names help locate the necropolises within the complex; their joint inscription treats them as one unit. This allows you to discover Mramorje both through its specific components and through this joint designation.
The Rastište–Sedaljka Church Complex
The Rastište–Sedaljka cultural heritage complex includes an old church and a new church. Both are dedicated to the Protection of the Most Holy Mother of God. Their shared dedication links the two churches, while their descriptions as the old and new churches preserve the distinction between them. Unlike Mramorje, with its medieval cemeteries, the focus here is on two churches and their dedication.
Through the Derventa Gorge to Rastište
The road to Rastište and the Mramorje archaeological site passes through the canyon of the Derventa River. The Derventa Gorge is a first-degree protection reserve in Tara National Park. The route to the village therefore passes through a protected landscape. The same road continues from Rastište to the tourist destination of Predov Krst. For orientation, you can distinguish between the approach through the canyon and continuing along the same road to the named destination. Check current road conditions before setting out.
Hiking Trails and the Carska Tara Route
The starting point for hiking trails in the Rastište area is the mountain lodge, housed in the old school in Sedaljka. Check the condition of the hiking trails before setting out. The Carska Tara route is a separate option: it is 42 km long and runs from Kaluđerske Bare through Dobro Polje, Ljuto Polje, Tankosin Grob, Mitrovac and Rastište to Lake Perućac, and on to Perućac. Rastište is therefore one of several named places along the route.
The two route descriptions answer different planning questions: the mountain lodge marks the starting point for hiking trails in the Rastište area; Carska Tara describes a 42 km route through several places. This distinction helps you consider local hiking options separately from planning a longer route.
