A circular village with preserved Baroque-inspired plans, a sanctuary dating back about 6,200 years and vineyards documented in a medieval charter tell very different stories from Timiș County. The county offers cultural and historical tourism, spa and health tourism, recreational tourism and sports tourism. If you are looking for accommodation in Timiș, you can use this variety of themes to guide your choice: circular village and archaeology, cycling, nature, spa or regional food culture.

Circular village and early history

Charlottenburg is Romania’s only circular village and is designated a historic monument. Its regular layout has an inner circle diameter of about 210 metres. The village was founded around 1770 by 32 families of German colonists; its Baroque-inspired plans have been preserved to this day. Here, the village’s form and founding history can be explored together.

The Parța sanctuary is rectangular, divided into two rooms and about 6,200 years old. It contains a double statue with a female figure and a figure with a realistically modelled bull’s head. Its layout and figurative depiction offer two distinct insights into this archaeological site.

The Cornești site covers about 1,800 hectares and lies between Cornești and Orțișoara. Earthworks I and II are particularly visible; the gate of the second wall is considered the main attraction of the entire complex. In Ciacova, the Cula, a military tower belonging to the former fortress, dates from the 14th century. Mercy Castle in Carani was built between 1733 and 1734, is designated a historic monument and is now a ruin.

Cycling route, lake and tree species

The cycle route along the Bega Canal runs from Timișoara out of the city to the Serbian border and is 37 kilometres long. This makes cycling a clearly defined theme for a trip through the county.

At 460 hectares, Lacul Surduc is the largest lake in Timiș County; fishing and recreation are possible there. Its unfrozen water creates winter conditions that allow thousands of waterbirds to survive. The Bazoș dendrological park offers a different perspective on nature: it covers 60 hectares and includes more than 1,100 tree species from every continent. The park has been a protected area since 1994.

Spa towns and parkland

In Buziaș, treatments with carbonated mineral water, CO₂ mofettes and aeroionisation are available. The colonnade adds an architectural highlight: this 500-metre-long wooden structure is designed in the Byzantine style. In Buziaș, spa and health tourism thus sit alongside a striking landmark.

The treatment centre at Băile Călacea offers physiotherapy, electrotherapy, laser therapy, paraffin packs, diadynamic therapy, massages and light baths. Check current availability and medical suitability before using these services. The recreation area includes an Olympic-size thermal-water swimming pool and sports facilities; check current operating arrangements before travelling. The spa park, which covers almost 14 hectares, contains old trees, an acacia forest, spruces, a lake with white water lilies and a small zoo.

Wine and rural dining

The vineyards of Recaș cover 750 hectares and are documented in a medieval charter dated 11 November 1447. The Wine Route includes tastings, vineyard tours and visits to local producers. The regional wine and tourism project connects the Silagiu–Buziaș and Recaș areas with the communities in Nițchidorf.

“Breakfast in Margina” is a rural tourism experience inspired by the village tradition of welcoming guests at a laid table. It offers local cheeses, eggs, honey, fruit preserves, bread baked on the stove and traditional dumplings. Banat Brunch presents gastronomic culture in authentic rural homes and uses fresh ingredients from gardens, orchards or local producers. Event formats include interactive workshops, walks or guided tours, and markets featuring producers and craftspeople.

Timișeni Șag Monastery

Timișeni Șag Monastery is a convent founded in 1944. Its outbuildings house weaving and icon-painting workshops. Overnight accommodation is available for pilgrims; check current arrangements before travelling.
