Recaș brings together a history of wine-growing, local history and Banat culture. For planning your trip, wine is a good starting point: Cramele Recaş offers guided tours of vineyards and the winery, as well as themed tastings. The museum also tells the story of local history and architecture, while the water tower offers a glimpse into the town’s technical past. In June, an annual city festival adds to the attractions. You can plan your stay around wine, history, culture or an event date.

Wine-growing: a long history and a dated record

Wine has been grown in the Recaș wine region since the 2nd century. The museum displays a copy of a document from Budapest dated 11 November 1447, recording the purchase of Recaș’s vineyards. The long history of wine-growing and the specific purchase in 1447 are two distinct historical points of reference.

Cramele Recaş offers two options with different focuses: guided tours of vineyards and the winery, and themed wine tastings. The tour takes you through the places where wine is grown; the tasting focuses on sampling. Consider whether you would prefer to learn about wine on a guided tour or through a themed tasting.

Local history at the museum and water tower

After restoration, the local history museum opened in 2002 in the house of doctor Iosif Stitzl. The building is representative of Recaș’s old architecture. The local history department occupies five rooms on the upper floor; the ground floor houses departments devoted to ethnography, cultural anthropology and sport. The history of the town is thus presented alongside other cultural and sporting themes.

The water tower adds a look at technical infrastructure to the story of local history. Its technical function in the water supply network ended; it was subsequently renovated and incorporated into the city’s tourist route. Its former role is therefore clearly distinct from the museum’s collections and architectural themes.

Banat traditions and equestrian connections

The “Recăşeana” dance ensemble preserves and promotes Banat folk traditions and is considered an expression of Romanian cultural identity in Recaș. “Ziua Orașului Recaş,” an annual event held in June, is a celebration of the local community. If you would like to plan your trip around it, arrange your stay for June and check the specific event dates.

The Herneacova equestrian center offers riding lessons for amateurs. The Izvin stud farm breeds, selects and trains Nonius, Ardennes and Thoroughbred horses. Their activities are clearly distinct: the equestrian center offers riding lessons for amateurs, while the stud farm breeds, selects and trains Nonius, Ardennes and Thoroughbred horses. In Izvin, Ottlik Péter Manor was also built by Ottlik Péter in 1893; this building adds a specific historical point of reference to the equestrian themes.
