Zolt’s wooden church combines a clear construction date with a striking connection to the landscape: it stands on a rise above the village, offering views across the entire valley. Dedicated to the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, it dates from the 18th century. At the municipal level of Fârdea, it is one of the tourist attractions. The church thus brings together two specific interests: religious architectural history and a location with sweeping valley views.

Wooden Church and Historic Architecture

Inside, the vaults and walls are completely painted. The paintings were created in 1781 by Teodor Zugravul and Atanasie from Lugoj. The wooden church was also one of seven historic wooden churches in the Făget area included in a restoration and preservation programme initiated by the Ministry of Culture. The painted interior and the history of a regional preservation programme thus come together at this site.

The Gospodăria de la Zolt offers another perspective on architectural heritage. On the street side, there is a pantry above a pigsty; an open shed and a spacious stable on the garden side complete the arrangement. The outbuildings are combined under a shared roof with two layers of shingles. Unlike the wooden church, the architectural interest here lies in the functional arrangement of the buildings and their shared roof structure.

Wooded Slope and Leisure Facilities

The Zolt tourist complex is located on a slope fringed by beech, oak and birch forest, at an altitude of about 400 metres. This is a different connection to the landscape from that of the wooden church: there, the view opens out across the valley, while at the complex, the wooded slope forms the setting. Facilities include a fishing pond, an outdoor swimming pool that is popular in summer, and football and tennis courts. The seasonal qualification applies to the outdoor pool; the facilities mentioned also show that the complex caters to a range of leisure interests as well as offering a distinctive setting.

Further afield in the region, a route marked with a blue cross passes through beech forests and, in places, coniferous forests, leading to the summit of Padeș. It offers an additional perspective on nature, but should be considered a route in the wider region. In Zolt itself, potter Mihai Iamandi offers a range of local food products. Alongside architectural heritage and landscape, local products thus provide another distinct travel experience.

Reasons to Visit and Finding Accommodation

The renovated Zolt Training Center also has its own purpose: it now operates under the name “Centru de Formare Zolt” and is used for professional workshops. If you are considering attending, check the participation requirements in advance. This focus differs from a stay centred on the history of churches and houses or on the facilities at the tourist complex.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Zolt, it helps to decide first what you want from your trip. The history of church and house architecture offers a cultural focus; the tourist complex combines a wooded hillside setting with leisure facilities. The route to Padeș, by contrast, is in the wider region.
