Becicherecu Mic can be explored through several clearly distinct historical layers: two Orthodox churches with their own consecration and construction histories, a museum opened in 1987, and archaeological settlement remains. For a trip focused on local history, these bring together church art, memorial sites and archaeological sites as distinct points of interest. The Rugas and the town’s location on the road to Timișoara also provide practical points of reference for planning your trip.

Church history across two timelines

The Romanian Orthodox church was completed and blessed in 1909. After 2010, it was fully renovated and fitted with a carved iconostasis, carved furnishings and frescoes. An iconostasis is the screen of images in an Orthodox church; here, it is one of the church’s defining features. This adds a later history of renovation and furnishing to the building’s history.

The Serbian Orthodox church marks an earlier point in time: it was consecrated on 26 December 1823. Its patronal feast is the Translation of the Relics of Saint Nicholas. Comparing this with the Romanian Orthodox church’s completion in 1909 reveals two distinct milestones in the town’s church history.

Museum, house and memorial site

The Dimitrie Țichindeal Museum opened in August 1987 in the building of the Serbian school in Becicherecu Mic. Another historical detail is the protected historic house at No. 644, dating from 1914. Bucher Ioan had it built for his daughter, Bucher Anna-Maria, née Lauer. These details connect local history with specific buildings and people, rather than limiting it to churches. Becicherecu Mic is also home to the Monumentul Ostașului Sovietic, another local memorial site.

Archaeological traces on the plain

The Satul vechi archaeological site, also known as Dealul Crucii, lies on the plain near the Apa Mare stream. It contains traces of open settlements from the Neolithic, post-Roman period and Early Middle Ages, including periods in the 8th–9th and 12th–13th centuries. This site offers a different historical perspective from the dated churches and historic houses. The reference to the plain and stream describes the site; the municipality as a whole consists mostly of flat terrain and includes a single hill.

Rugas and dated events

The Romanian Orthodox Ruga falls on 15 August, the Feast of the Assumption of Mary. The Roman Catholic Ruga, locally known as Kirchweich, takes place in November. In 2022, an instrumental recital featuring authentic Banat music was held in the churchyard during the Romanian Orthodox Ruga. The 2024 programme included the ceremonial cutting of the festive loaf at the Adormirea Domnului Romanian Orthodox parish church.

The fishing competition Cupa Rugii at Balta Pescărețul also has dated editions: in August 2022, it reached its tenth edition; on 11 August 2024, the twelfth edition was announced for 15 August. These details help put the event’s history in context, but they are not a current schedule. If you plan to include a Ruga programme or the fishing competition in your trip, check the dates and programme for the specific year in advance.

Getting your bearings and planning your trip

Becicherecu Mic is on the Timișoara–Sânnicolau Mare road (DN 6), 17 km northwest of Timișoara. A route listing from 2022 showed bus line M44 running via Dudeștii Noi between Becicherecu Mic and Timișoara, and back. If you plan to use this service, check the current timetable before travelling.

Two separate questions can help you choose a destination: are you mainly interested in the named building and settlement histories, or do you want to plan your trip around a specific festival programme? For a fixed-date event, it is best to check your plans against the current programme; if travelling by bus, check the service for your travel dates.
