Valea Viilor is the birthplace of the composer Marţian Negrea. A church with preserved fortifications, an Ecomuseum with five farmsteads, and trails to the surrounding hills give the village several clear points of interest. When planning your trip, it helps to distinguish between the local cultural heritage, walks in the surrounding area, and a route connecting several places. Those who mainly want to experience the local heritage will focus on different things from those planning a route through several places.

The church and its preserved furnishings

The church is surrounded by defensive walls and towers. Four towers still remain; the walls are 6–7 m high and topped with battlements. At the north portal is a portcullis, which has been preserved intact since 1525. The complex thus brings together the surrounding fortifications and a specific feature at the portal.

The church’s furnishings also include items from different centuries: preserved are pews from 1528, an altar from 1779, an organ from 1807, and a soundboard above the pulpit from 1746. Each date belongs to a different furnishing, showing how many layers of history can be read in the church.

Marţian Negrea and the November festival

The connection with Marţian Negrea extends beyond his birthplace. His four-movement symphonic suite “Stories of Grui” depicts everyday life, as well as the customs and traditions of the people of Valea Viilor. Those interested in music and local cultural heritage will find a connection here between the composer and the themes of his work. The “Festivalul Martian Negrea” takes place every November in Valea Viilor. Check the date of the current edition before your trip.

Five farmsteads in the Ecomuseum

The Valea Viilor Ecomuseum comprises five farmsteads that have preserved their original appearance, with traditionally designed gardens and courtyards. The focus is therefore not only on individual historical objects, but also on the farmsteads and their landscaped outdoor areas. The commune of Valea Viilor is one of six settlements in Sibiu County that belong to the regional Ecomuseum network. These are two different levels: the five farmsteads of the local Ecomuseum and the commune’s membership in a larger regional network.

Walks, trails and regional orientation

A walk through Valea Viilor and to the surrounding hills offers views of residents’ cultivated gardens, the former vineyards, and the entire commune. The vineyards should be understood as former features of the landscape. The trails around Valea Viilor can currently be used for hiking, cycling, and horseback riding, allowing you to explore the area on foot, by bike, or on horseback.

The trail network connects Valea Viilor with Ighișu Nou, Motiș, Șoala, Agârbiciu, Axente Sever, Târnava, and Copșa Mică. The route “Pe urmele coloniştilor saşi” is a separate route: it runs from Sibiu via Slimnic, Axente Sever, Valea Viilor, Şeica Mică, Mândra, and Ocna Sibiului, and then back to Sibiu. The local trails and this multi-stop route therefore offer different scales for planning a trip.

Plan your accommodation and trip itinerary

Valea Viilor is on a side road branching off National Road DN 14. Plan your overnight stays according to whether your focus is on the local cultural heritage and trails around the village, or whether you also want to include the route and its other stops.
