Gothic architecture, museums with a range of themes and historic streets offer plenty of cultural points of interest on a trip to Sibiu. There are also various opportunities outdoors, from a themed cycling route to leisure activities and a market selling products from the region. You can plan your discoveries according to whether you are most interested in history, exercise or regional products.
Historic Streets and Gothic Architecture
Sibiu’s historic center can be explored via cobbled streets, narrow passageways, old houses with high roofs, churches, towers and defensive walls. The details shape the way you see the city: sometimes it is the roofs and facades, sometimes the passageways or traces of the fortifications. Those interested in architectural history will find a particularly striking landmark in the Muzeul de Istorie Casa Altemberger. The building was constructed at the end of the 15th century and is Romania’s largest Gothic secular ensemble.
An important note for planning your visit: Turnul Sfatului is currently closed to visitors due to renovation work. The work is expected to be completed by the end of 2027. Check its visitor status again before your trip.
Museums Offering Different Perspectives
The exhibitions at the Muzeul de Istorie Casa Altemberger provide an overview of the development of human communities in southern Transylvania. The focus is on Sibiu and its surroundings, with a time span ranging from the earliest human traces documented there, dating to the Paleolithic, to the modern era. This combines a broad regional overview with a particular focus on the city.
The European Art Gallery at the Muzeul Brukenthal is based on Baron Samuel von Brukenthal’s European painting collection. It comprises around 1,200 works by major European schools of painting from the 15th to the 18th century. Its approximate size and broad time span make the collection a distinct focus alongside the history of the city and region.
The Muzeul Bisericii Evanghelice focuses on the Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession, that is, the Lutheran Church in Romania, and on the community and religious life of the Transylvanian Saxons. Its permanent exhibition features sacred works of art and cultural heritage objects from seven centuries. The exhibits include altars, communion vessels, sculptures, textiles and printed works.
The craft tradition is also represented: the “Asociaţia pentru întreţinerea Casei Calfelor” was founded in Sibiu in 2007. Casa Calfelor is the first journeymen’s house outside Germany, France and Switzerland. This history adds the subject of journeymen’s guilds to the museum perspectives.
Cycling Routes and Leisure Activities
The themed Traseul Emil Cioran cycling route connects Sibiu with Rășinari. The 25-kilometer route is a loop and passes through Sub-Arini Park, Dumbrava Forest, Rășinari and Poplaca. Check current route conditions before setting off. Gușterița also has six hiking and cycling routes. They opened in 2014, each has its own story and offers a different experience. As a seasonal activity, they are available from spring to autumn.
The Lacul lui Binder leisure complex has wakeboarding facilities, beaches, a floating playground, beach volleyball courts and piers. Since operating conditions can change, it is a good idea to check which facilities are available before your visit. Near Sibiu, the ASTRA Museum also offers carriage rides; this leisure activity may vary by season.
Regional Products and Getting There
The Piața volantă Transilvania in Sibiu is a market for small-scale producers from the region. It offers cheese, baked goods and meat products, as well as organically grown fruit and vegetables, organic honey, jams and syrups. The operating period listed for 2026 begins on August 29. Check the market days for your travel dates.
If you are arriving by plane, Sibiu International Airport is directly connected to the city’s public transport network. Tursib bus services run directly to key areas of the city. Since routes and timetables vary over time, check the latest connections before your trip.
