Cârţişoara brings local history together with a clear connection to the Transfăgărășan. There are several different points of interest to consider when planning your visit: the Muzeul Sătesc Badea Cârțan, the churches in Streza and Oprea Cârțișoara, and summer trails between Bâlea Cascadă and Bâlea Lac. The village’s history is brought to life through specific collection items and construction dates; the starting point of a Transfăgărășan stage and different walking times for summer trails are additional points of interest.

Museum collection and village history

The Muzeul Sătesc Badea Cârțan opened in 1969. Its collection includes objects and books that belonged to the scholar Badea Cârțan, as well as ceramics, reverse-glass paintings, traditional peasant bridal chests and products from the former glassworks in Glăjărie. A valuable collection of reverse-glass icons by local icon painter Matei Țimforea adds to the cultural-historical perspective. Personal belongings and books are thus displayed alongside handicrafts and works of art; reverse-glass painting provides a connection between the groups of objects mentioned.

Churches and architectural history

The “Buna Vestire” Church in Streza Cârțișoara was built between 1818 and 1821 from river stone and bricks; construction was funded by the village. The “Sf. Nicolae” Church in Oprea Cârțișoara dates from 1806. It was therefore built twelve years before construction began on Buna Vestire. The two churches offer different points of comparison: Sf. Nicolae is dated earlier, while the building materials and funding are also specified for Buna Vestire.

The Transfăgărășan as a route connection

The Transfăgărășan was inaugurated on 20 September 1974, after four years of construction under very difficult conditions. Its first 21-kilometre section starts in the village of Cârțișoara. Together, Cârțișoara and the nearby junction with the DN 1 are considered one of the route’s endpoints. The village can therefore be viewed both in terms of its cultural history and in relation to the course and history of this road.

Summer trails and walking times

Several easier mountain hiking trails between Bâlea Cascadă and Bâlea Lac use Cârțișoara as a starting point and can be reached via the Transfăgărășan. One named trail, Cîrțișoara–Glăjărie–Bâlea Cascadă–Bâlea Lac, starts at the Muzeul Badea Cârțan, the tourist information centre. When planning your time, there are two summer trails to consider: the summer trail in the Bâlea Valley is marked with a blue stripe and takes two to three hours to walk. The trail from Hotel Bâlea Cascadă to Lake Bâlea is also marked in blue, follows Muchia Buteanului and takes about four to five hours in summer. The second time estimate is explicitly approximate; together, the two estimates provide a shorter and a longer timeframe to help you choose a hike.

Landscape and nature reserve

The landscape around Cârțișoara offers views of the Făgăraș Mountains. The Bâlea complex nature reserve is nearby. Established in 1932, it covers approximately 180 hectares. Mountain views and protected landscapes thus add further aspects to the destination, alongside its cultural-historical sites and route connections.

If you are looking for hotels in Cârţişoara, the focus of your visit can be a helpful starting point: would you like to focus on the churches and the collection, or set aside time for one of the summer hikes described here? The walking times given distinguish between two to three hours and approximately four to five hours.
