The wooden church of “Sfântul Nicolae” dates back to 1750; hiking trails of varying lengths and activities on the Mureș complement Răstolița’s cultural and historical appeal. When planning, it is worth taking a closer look at the individual routes: they differ not only in length, but also in difficulty ratings, viewpoints, and road or ridge sections.

A historic landmark

The wooden church of “Sfântul Nicolae” stands in the village of Răstolița, in Răstolița commune. It is a historic monument with code MS-II-m-A-15756. The building dates back to 1750 and was renovated in the 19th century. Alongside hiking and outdoor activities, visitors can therefore also explore a specific cultural and historical landmark in the village. Those who like to add a historical dimension to their travel plans can make the church a focus of their stay.

Hiking trails by length and difficulty

The Răstolița–Plaiul Ulmului–Poiana Compii–Valea Vișa–Răstolița circular trail is 15 km long and of moderate difficulty. Poiana Compii offers a beautiful view. Also of moderate difficulty is the 26 km circular trail via Valea Iodului, Poiana Borta, Poiana Belciu, Poiana Iodului, Poiana Ursu and Valea Rusu, returning to Răstolița; from there, you can enjoy views of the Călimani ridge. These two loops offer a useful comparison: both are rated moderate, but they differ in distance and in the viewpoints mentioned.

A shorter option is the 5 km Răstolița–Podul Borzia–Santinela Borzia–Răstolița circular trail. It is easy and includes an easy climbing section at Santinela Borzia. The 12 km circular trail via Valea Iodului, Poiana Borta, Creasta Listeș and Drumul Listeș, returning to Răstolița, is difficult along the ridge section and includes a 4 m rocky passage. This gives you a choice between a short loop rated easy and a longer route with a specifically noted passage.

Another route leads from Răstolița via Valea Tihu, Șaua Tihului, Pietrosul, Negoiul Unguresc, Șaua Negoiului and Valea Ilvei to Lunca Bradului. It covers 19 km, plus 20 km of forestry road, as well as a 16 km ridge section. The moderate 26 km circular trail via Bistra Mureșului, Creasta Scaunului, Scaunul Domnului, Poiana Mijloc, Valea Gălăoaia Mică and Gălăoaia, returning to Răstolița, includes 11 km on the road. Check route conditions before setting out. For the 15 km loop, also check the trail markings; for the route to Lunca Bradului and the loop via Scaunul Domnului, check access as well.

The Mureș and natural surroundings

Rafting Mureș runs daily rafting trips for groups of 2 to 8 people on the Mureș River between Stânceni and Răstolița. Check availability and booking details before your trip. Rafting competitions are also held on the Mureș in the Răstolița area, particularly in spring. If you want to attend a competition, check the dates in advance. During your stay, you can fish for trout, grayling or huchen in the mountain waters; check local rules and permits before fishing.

The protected landscapes should also be considered at the commune level: Răstolița commune is part of Călimani National Park. Scaunul Domnului is considered a special attraction for the commune and is also part of the 26 km circular trail described above. The protected Defileul Mureșului Superior Nature Park stretches across the northeastern part of Mureș County, covering the communes of Stânceni, Lunca Bradului, Răstolița and Deda. Cycling tourism is also popular in the area around Răstolița.
