An artist’s studio, centuries of monastery history and marked hiking trails offer different ways to explore Bistra Mureşului. When planning your trip, it is worth treating culture and nature as separate areas of interest: for a hike, the distance and duration may be specified, while the history of the art and village is tied to specific names and dates.
Hiking trails and landscape
The Defileul Mureșului Superior Nature Park is also of interest for exploring the regional landscape. It has been legally protected since 2007 and covers 9,000 hectares. Its special features include protected bird, flower and animal species, as well as extensive coniferous and deciduous forests. The park also includes Deda and extends for about 30 kilometres along the Mureș through the volcanic Călimani and Gurghiu Mountains.
One natural attraction near Bistra Mureşului is Cascada Cofu waterfall on the Valea Cofu. Another option is the longer hiking trail 15MN10, from Bistra Mureşului via Valea din Mijloc to Poiana Cofu: it is rated moderate, is 20.6 kilometres long and is listed as taking between seven and seven hours and 45 minutes. Along the way, there are views of Scaunul Domnului and Bistricioru. Its distance and duration make this an extended hiking stage; it can also be ridden by mountain bike.
Another route to Scaunul Domnului starts at the local Păstrăvărie and follows a trail marked with a blue triangle. This should not be confused with the homologated Bistra Mureşului–Scaunul Domnului–Poiana de Mijloc–Poiana Stejii–Poiana Moldoveanca–Poiana Țiganca–Poiana Lungă trail, which was remarked with blue blazes in 2024. For planning today, it is advisable to check current trail conditions, especially if you choose a longer route.
Art and historical traces
Casa Atelier Ion Vlasiu was built in the 1970s according to the artist’s own design. Ion Vlasiu worked there in the summer for 25 years. His monumental work “Stihiile războiului” also took shape in this house; it was exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 1976. This story connects the place with the work and career of a specific artist.
An older historical trace lies in the territory of the village of Bistra Mureşului, near the Bistra stream, a right-bank tributary of the Mureș. A Greek Catholic monastery dedicated to “Sfânta Fecioară” once stood there and was also known as Mănăstirea pe Bistra. It was active in the 16th and 17th centuries and is documented in records for the years 1546 and 1690.
The history of the Bistra Valley also includes traces of craftsmanship: people built picturesque watermills and fulling mills, known as vâltori, along the valley near Bistra Mureşului. Together with the monastery’s history and Casa Atelier, this offers another perspective on the village’s past, alongside its landscape and hiking routes.
When planning your stay, you can therefore decide first whether to focus on a longer hike or on cultural history. The precise duration of route 15MN10 provides a concrete guide for planning your time; the studio, monastery and mills represent different historical themes.
