Targu Mures can be discovered in many different ways: through historical collections, art in grand interiors and routes with views across the city. When planning your visit, it is worth considering these highlights separately. The Teleki Library and the Bolyai Museum turn the focus to books and science; the Palace of Culture brings together several halls, galleries and memorial exhibitions. The Citadel and Cornești Plateau offer different experiences—from regional history to walks and panoramas.

Library and Scientific Collections

The Teleki Library is an encyclopedic and scientific book collection founded by Sámuel Teleki and open to everyone. Count Teleki Sámuel opened Transylvania’s first public library in 1802. Its holdings include incunabula, famous Bibles and hand-painted atlases from the 17th century. These works reveal different facets of the collection: early printed books, religious texts and historical maps. If you are interested in the history of books and science, you will find several specific points of interest here, rather than just a single exhibit.

The Bolyai Museum is also devoted to a scientific subject. Founded in 1937, it displays personal belongings of the two mathematicians that have been preserved. The memorial room is now located on the ground floor of the Teleki Library building. In this way, an extensive book collection and personal mementos offer distinct perspectives on science and history.

Art and Remembrance at the Palace of Culture

Visitors to the Palace of Culture can see the foyer, staircases, Hall of Mirrors, Small Hall and Great Hall. The palace also houses a gallery of Hungarian classical art, a gallery of modern Romanian art, and memorial exhibitions dedicated to mayors Dr. György Bernády and Dr. Emil Dandea. The rooms and exhibitions bring together several themes without limiting them to a single art form. During your visit, you can focus on the architecture of the interiors or explore the galleries and local places of remembrance.

The Citadel and Regional History

The medieval Citadel visible today was built in the 17th century on the site of an older fortification dating from 1492. It has a pentagonal layout and seven bastions, and has been fully renovated. This sequence of dates helps distinguish the present-day structure from its earlier predecessor.

Inside the Citadel, the Archaeological and Historical Museum presents the history of the region, as well as its cultural and archaeological heritage. It complements the Citadel’s architectural history with a focus on the area and its past. If you are interested in history, the combination of the site itself and the museum offers two clearly distinct focal points: the fortification’s form and development, and regional history and archaeological collections.

Walks and Views at Cornești Plateau

Cornești Plateau is ideal for long walks along its avenues and through the surrounding woods. You can take in a panorama of the city from a designated viewpoint. There is also a modern playground, a fitness park, running and cycling paths, and a renovated amphitheater. The plateau thus combines paths and green spaces with a specific viewpoint and several different facilities.

You can reach the plateau on foot, by bicycle, by car or by bus. The bus runs in summer. If you are planning around this seasonal bus service, check the timetable for your travel dates. The different ways of getting there and leisure activities offer a different side of your stay from the historic interiors and collections.

A Viewpoint at the Zoo

Târgu-Mureș Zoo also has an observation tower, from which visitors can look out over the forest and the animals. The view combines observing the animals with a perspective on the surrounding woodland. When choosing what to do, this offers a distinct focus alongside the library collections, art galleries and walking paths of Cornești Plateau.
