As a travel destination, Reghin brings together church architecture, ethnographic collections, violin making and nature. It also offers two named cycling routes with specified lengths and an oak forest designated as a nature reserve. Visitors can weigh up cultural and landscape interests by considering the different highlights when choosing the city.
Church Architecture from Wooden Churches to the Late Baroque
The wooden church in Reghin, known as “Bisericuța lui Petru Maior,” is the only Romanian historical monument of national importance in the municipality of Reghin and is listed among the historical monuments. Its cruciform ground plan with three apses reflects Moldavian influences. The iconostasis also offers a precise historical detail: it was made in 1760; its Royal Doors display six painted medallions set in an openwork decorative panel featuring vines and grapes.
Other churches each have their own distinctive features. The Reformed Church at 51 Strada Mihai Viteazu was built in 1890 to plans by architect Alpár Ignác. Its furnishings include a pulpit, canopy, altar furniture and pews; the coffered ceiling depicts churches in Transylvania. A choral music festival is held there every year. If you would like to include it in your plans, check the dates before your trip, as the schedule may vary.
The Roman Catholic Church is in the Late Baroque style, was built during the reign of Empress Maria Theresa and was completed in 1781. Twelve stained-glass windows depict notable Hungarian figures, kings and saints. By comparison, the wooden church’s three apses and the Reformed Church’s coffered ceiling show how differently the churches’ architectural and decorative features can be described.
Museums and Violin Making
The “Anton Badea” Ethnographic Museum combines a permanent exhibition with an open-air area. “Viața satului mureşean” presents representative cultural objects in seven rooms. In the open-air area, a model of a Mureș village illustrates how houses and outbuildings fit together. The site includes a wooden church from Iara, reconstructed at the museum in 1998, a water mill from Vătava, an oil mill from Hodac and a wine press from Batoș.
The Saxon Museum is dedicated to the life of the Transylvanian Saxons in Reghin and the surrounding area. As a permanent museum, it reconstructs their way of life through old costumes, embroidery, household objects, books and ecclesiastical items. Together with the permanent ethnographic exhibition, it offers a different focus from the churches: here, the emphasis is on ways of life and cultural objects. Violin making is also part of the local identity. Reghin has two musical instrument factories and numerous violin-making workshops; the “Piramida Viorilor” monument, created by Barothy Adam for violin makers, is 7.30 metres high and stands in front of the Evangelical church.
Cycling Routes and Nature
Two cycling routes are listed with their length, markings and course. The yellow-marked Velopoteca Apusului is 5.4 kilometres long and runs from Strada Spitalului to Strada Mihai Viteazu. The red Velopoteca Poienii is four kilometres long, runs from Strada Vânătorilor to Strada Dedradului and passes through Pădurea Hedel forest. Based on the stated distances, Poienii is the shorter of the two options. Route conditions may change; check them before setting out.
Another nature spot is Pădurea Rotundă, an oak forest near Reghin designated as a nature reserve and used for recreation, sport and tourism. Colonies of European bee-eaters have also been recorded in the Reghin area; the species is protected at European level. These offer nature enthusiasts two different points of interest: a named oak forest and a reference to a protected bird species in the surrounding area.
For navigation, Visit Mureș provides a network of routes and an interactive map for exploring history, art and religion. As the interface may change over time, check the map features when planning. This makes it possible to tailor the balance of cultural interests, cycling routes and nature to your own itinerary, without having to combine them into a fixed schedule.
