Târgovişte can be discovered from several cultural perspectives: Curtea Domnească represents a court complex with fortifications, while the museums bring together regional history, art and personal collections. Parks and cultural events add further ways to shape your stay.
Curtea Domnească: Court Complex and Fortifications
The Ansamblul Monumental Curtea Domnească was conceived as a complex of buildings for the ruler, his family, courtiers and guards. The complex was therefore intended for different groups at court. Its first internal documentary mention in Târgovişte dates from 1403. This date marks an early written mention, not necessarily the construction year of the entire complex.
The ensemble also includes Turnul Chindiei, a key element of Curtea Domnească’s fortifications. This brings two aspects into view together: the function of the complex for the court and the tower’s role within the fortifications. Those interested in history will find both a specific year and insight into the complex’s different functions.
Museums: Regional History and Art
The permanent exhibition at the Muzeul de Istorie traces the region’s history from the earliest human traces to the end of the First World War. The building itself was constructed between 1901 and 1902 as a courthouse. The exhibition theme and the building’s history thus offer two distinct historical perspectives: one follows the region’s long history, while the other identifies the building’s original function.
The Muzeul de Artă was built between 1892 and 1894 as the seat of Dâmboviţa County Prefecture. In the council chamber, murals decorate the room with neoclassical, botanical and floral motifs, as well as influences from the Italian Baroque. Alongside the building’s former administrative function, the council chamber offers a direct introduction to painting and the history of styles. Those interested in the decoration of historic interiors will find a different focus here than in the chronologically arranged exhibition at the Muzeul de Istorie.
The Muzeul Vasile Blendea offers another perspective. Its permanent exhibition is housed in an 18th-century Kula house. The collection includes sculptures, paintings and drawings, as well as designs for monumental art, furniture, textiles, work materials, ceramics and personal objects. Its range thus extends from works of art to materials and personal items. This is a distinct collection focus alongside the regional history exhibition and the murals at the Muzeul de Artă.
Events and Festival Recordings
Cultural, artistic, educational and scientific events are regularly held at Casa Romanței. If you would like to plan your trip around a particular event, check the date in advance. Visitors can also watch video recordings of the National Romance Festival “Crizantema de aur” there. Attending an event and taking an interest in the festival recordings offer two different reasons to visit.
Parks and Leisure Activities
The existing ruins in Parcul Mitropoliei have been restored and enhanced. The park itself has also been improved by expanding the green spaces and rebuilding the fountains. Historic traces and the design of the green space are two distinct features here.
Grădina Zoologică Târgovişte was relocated to Parcul Chindia between 1970 and 1972. Another attraction there is Aleea celor 33 de voievozi, which was inaugurated in 2006. The two dates refer to different events: the relocation of the zoo and the later inauguration of the avenue.
Parcul UM Gară has a playground, a fitness area, an open-air library, and walking and cycling paths. It offers a range of activities, from playing and exercising to reading and getting around on the paths. For travelers who would like to include cycling in their plans, the cycling paths are a practical option.
The Complexul Turistic de Natație Târgoviște offers swimming, minifootball, tennis and basketball. Check the current facilities before making specific plans. Together with the parks, it offers a choice between green spaces with paths and other leisure options, and a facility with swimming and various sports.
