In Dimbovita, two very different themes for exploration come together: the history of rule in Târgoviște and natural areas where protected status and bison watching are tangible. Museums, historical buildings and named routes add further perspectives on Dâmbovița County.
Rulership, architecture and museums
The first domestic documentary mention of the Curtea Domnească in Târgoviște dates back to 1403. The complex was designed as a group of buildings serving the ruler and his family, as well as courtiers, servants and the guard. The Curtea Domnească can therefore be viewed not only as a single building, but also in terms of its intended function for different groups.
Another architectural landmark is the Potlogi Palace, considered a symbol of the Brâncovenesc style. For a cultural discovery in Pucioasa, the Muzeul de Etnografie și Folclor offers another connection to architecture: it is housed in Casa Dobrescu, a building typical of the sub-Carpathian region of Muntenia. The Muzeul Evoluției Omului și Tehnologiei în Paleolitic is considered the first museum of its kind in Romania and in Central and Southeastern Europe.
Târgoviște is also home to Casa Romanței, a distinctive museum venue unique in Romania. Visitors can watch video recordings of the National “Crizantema de aur” Festival there. Casa-Atelier Gabriel Popescu has a different focus and is described as Romania’s only engraving workshop-house with a wooden press. Nature reserves and bison
Bucegi Natural Park is a protected area and part of the international Natura 2000 network. Dâmbovița County is also home to several distinct designated nature reserves: Cheile Tătarului and Canionul Horoabei are nature reserves, while Turbăria Lăptici is a botanical nature reserve. The different designations help distinguish these natural attractions; check the applicable regulations before visiting.
Zimbrăria Neagra offers a hands-on nature experience, where visitors can observe the bison kept there. The enclosure covers 162 hectares in Pădurea Neagră near Bucșani, between the Crivăț and Neagra streams. The reserve was established in 1983 to promote the bison’s adaptation to the lowlands. Routes and regional discoveries
The named routes offer different experiences. The Circuitul Turistic al Capitalelor Țării Românești connects Bucharest, Târgoviște, Curtea de Argeș and Câmpulung. The “Ruta secretelor județului Dâmbovița spre munții Bucegi” is 119.8 kilometres long in total and was recognized as a cultural-tourism route on August 25, 2020. While the Circuitul focuses on four connected cities, the Ruta’s stated length provides a concrete point of reference for planning. “Dâmboviţa 4 x 4” is an off-road route in Dâmboviţa County.
The traditional fair in Voinești also offers a glimpse of regional food culture, though as a time-specific snapshot: a 2015 description presents it as an annual event that had already been running for more than 50 years at the time. The offerings then included cheese, traditional meat products, vegetables, fruit, beekeeping products and traditional drinks from the Dâmbovița Valley and beyond. The museums in Dâmbovița are open year-round, including on public holidays. They are closed on Mondays and on days when announced work or unforeseen events take place.
