Pucioasa combines the history of a balneoclimatic spa resort with walking trails along the Ialomița Valley and an ethnographic museum housed in a distinctive building. The town lies in the middle reaches of the valley, among Subcarpathian hills just over 600 metres high. Those interested in culture and landscape will find several different ways to shape a stay here.

Valley, hills and spa history

Its development as a balneoclimatic spa resort began after the sulphur springs were discovered after 1828. Another point of interest connected with the springs is the Sursa area at the foot of Spătărelul–Mitropolie Hill, associated with sulphur and iodine springs. This local history sits alongside the trails and viewpoints that connect the town with the valley and the Leaota Mountains.

The Pucioasa Reservoir lies on the Ialomița River, covers 91 hectares and is situated at an elevation of 418 metres. These features help place the town’s varied landscapes in context: the river valley, the reservoir and the higher Subcarpathian hills. From Parcul Independenței, you can look through the Ialomița Valley towards the Leaota Mountains.

Walking and cycling routes

Two circular routes offer different experiences. The Patrana circular route is a one-hour walk; it starts in the centre of Pucioasa and leads to the bridge over the Bizdidel. The Lunca Ialomiței circular route starts on Strada Republicii at the entrance to Central Park Pucioasa and follows the Ialomița Valley towards Pucioasa-Sat. Patrana therefore offers a specific duration and a destination at the bridge, while Lunca Ialomiței highlights the route through the valley.

The area also offers a variety of landscapes for cycling. Around Pucioasa, you can explore the forests, forestry roads, paths and gentle ridges of the Leaota Mountains by bike. More broadly, cycling routes start in villages around Pucioasa and Runcu and lead to alpine areas known for mountain biking competitions. These descriptions distinguish local landscapes from the longer routes towards alpine areas.

Museum and crafts

The Ethnographic Museum is housed in Casa Dobrescu. Characteristic of Subcarpathian Muntenia, the building has a solid stone ground floor and an upper floor supported by wooden beams. Its architecture is defined by a high shingle roof, a veranda running along the entire south side, a wooden balustrade and carved wooden posts.

The exhibition, reorganised in 2020, presents the written and unwritten history of Pucioasa and the town’s development as a balneoclimatic spa resort. Its themes include traditional activities and crafts: pottery, cooperage and domestic textile production, as well as folk costumes. The museum visit thus offers an introduction both to the town’s history and to everyday crafts.

The Ethnography and Folklore Museum is open Wednesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 17:00; the ticket office closes 30 minutes before visiting hours end. Check the opening hours before your visit.

Architecture and local history

Other buildings provide their own historical points of interest. Casa Nicolae Mateescu was built in 1934 by architect Constantin Joja and combines elements of traditional Romanian architecture with modern ones. Biserica din Șerbănești was built by Trandafir Maltezeanu in 1894. Gara Pucioasa railway station was also inaugurated on 27 May 1894.

Parcul Independenței is home to Monumentul Eroilor Neamului, a work by sculptor Liviu Brezeanu. At the park exits and on Fântânelor Street, views open through the valley towards the Leaota Mountains. Together, these features bring architectural history, a monument in the park and a specific landscape view into focus.

Getting there and planning your stay

Pucioasa is on national road DN 71 between Târgoviște, Pietroșița and Sinaia. Together with the trails in the valley and the cultural sites, this offers a varied focus for planning your trip: you can prioritise local history, walking routes and the landscape of the Ialomița Valley, or consider cycling routes towards the alpine areas.
