Nine gorge sections carved by the Ialomița shape the upper valley in the area of the Moroeni commune. Together with the karst terrain, they give the landscape a distinct geological character. The marked themed trails are also worth considering when choosing where to stay: they vary considerably in length, estimated time and difficulty. If you are considering Moroeni for its gorges, caves and peat bogs, you can plan your days around your available time and seasonal interests.

Gorges, Caves and Karst

Cheile Tătarului is a geological, natural and palaeontological reserve of national interest in the upper Ialomița area of the Moroeni commune. The Peștera-Cocora Nature Reserve includes the Bătrâna–Peștera Ialomiței karst system. Peștera Rătei offers another glimpse of the karst: its winding passages extend across three levels, one active and two fossil. The cave is about 8,000 m long and has an elevation difference of +67 m. It is considered the most important endokarst phenomenon in the Bucegi Mountains.

Turbăria Lăptici is another natural attraction in the area. A description of the nature park published in 2023 lists the peat bog among its 14 nature reserves and describes it as Romania’s highest-altitude peat bog. So, as well as gorges and caves, there are protected areas with their own distinctive landscapes to explore.

Themed Trails with Different Time Requirements

In the Scropoasa and Zănoaga area of Moroeni, the Lacul Scropoasa – Cheile Zanoagei – Zanoaga themed trail takes you through the area. It is 2.51 km long, takes about 1.5 hours and is of moderate difficulty. The Turbaria Laptici themed trail is 0.56 km long, takes about 25 minutes and is rated easy. By comparison, this second route is shorter and rated easier; the Scropoasa-Zanoaga route takes considerably longer. You can weigh up the estimated times and difficulty ratings when planning your trip.

For a winter trip, the Piciorul Cocora alpine ski slope on the Bucegi Plateau, within the commune, is another option. It is 3,550 m long, 30 m wide and has a gradient of 16 percent. As ski-slope facilities may change seasonally, check conditions before planning your winter trip.

Monastery and Cave Visit

Mănăstirea Peștera Ialomiței is located at an altitude of 1,600 m and is one of the most important tourist attractions in the Bucegi Mountains. The monastery’s first wooden hermitage, at the entrance to Peștera Ialomiței, is believed to have been built by the voivode Mihnea Vodă cel Rău (1508–1509). The cave is 1,128 m long in total, with 450 m prepared for visitors.
