The destination of Cluj offers a range of experiences, from museums and monastic traditions to nature reserves. The character of the region is especially evident in the diverse landscapes and cultural heritage preserved by Cluj County.

Three Natural Regions and Special Protected Areas

Cluj County lies in the northwestern half of Romania, where the Apuseni Mountains, the Someș Plateau and the Transylvanian Plain meet. These three natural regions provide a regional setting in which visitors can discover a variety of landscapes.

Cheile Turzii is a complex nature reserve of geological, faunal, floral, archaeological and speleological significance. The gorge stretches for about three kilometres, with walls reaching up to 300 metres in height. Possible activities include climbing and mountaineering: the many routes cover all levels of difficulty. Route conditions and restrictions may change; check them before visiting.

The Stufărişurile de la Sic offer a different kind of landscape. This ornithological nature reserve is in the village of Sic, in the Fizeş Valley. Reed beds, salt meadows, steppe and wet grasslands, marshes and ponds form a mosaic here. The area provides habitat for a wide variety of migratory waterbirds.

Museums Between Open-Air History and Collecting Traditions

In Cluj-Napoca is the Parcul Etnografic Naţional „Romulus Vuia”, Romania’s first open-air museum. It was founded on 1 June 1929. The Muzeul Etnografic al Transilvaniei offers another perspective on cultural history: its collection comprises 41,542 original artefacts; this figure may change. Most of the items come from rural Transylvania and date from the 17th to the 20th century. They reflect the cultural milieu of the Romanian, Hungarian, Saxon and Roma populations.

The Sic Dance Museum also brings tradition to life through tangible objects: it displays a collection of 460 pairs of boots used for traditional dances. The exhibition may change. The traditional houses have been restored. The complex also includes a barn built in the traditional style. In Sic, the predominantly Hungarian community continues to preserve ethnographic traditions.

The Muzeul de Istorie Turda was founded in 1943 in the former salt customs house. The building also served as a temporary residence for the princes of Transylvania. The museum’s collection is reported to comprise 30,000 objects representative of all historical periods; the collection may change.

Monastic Traditions and Cultural Encounters

Nicula Monastery has an uninterrupted monastic history spanning several hundred years. Glass painting developed there into a school of its own, the first of its kind in the country; villagers learned the monastic craft. Every year on 15 August, the monastery hosts Transylvania’s largest Orthodox pilgrimage for the patronal feast of “Adormirea Maicii Domnului”. Nicula thus combines a long religious history with an annual tradition.

Bánffy Castle in Bonţida tells another chapter in Transylvanian architectural history as a representative monument of Transylvanian Baroque. The park and lake behind the castle are suitable for picnics and relaxation. Current access may change; check before visiting.

Experiences at Salina Turda

Salina Turda combines modern leisure facilities with treatment options. The Terezia Mine has an underground lake where boat trips are possible 112 metres below ground in the salt mine. Salina Turda therefore offers both the mine’s distinctive surroundings and leisure and treatment options. Visitor offerings may change; check the current options when planning your visit.

Practical Travel Information

The Cluj National Centre for Tourism Information and Promotion organises free guided tours in the historic centre of Cluj-Napoca, lasting between one and three hours. They take place Monday to Friday between 08:00 and 16:00. As visitor offerings may change, it is advisable to check the times before your trip.

The regional transport networks also give an idea of the scale of Cluj County: the public road network covers 2,454 kilometres, including 342 kilometres of national roads. Railway lines with a total length of 232 kilometres also run through the county. Infrastructure figures may change over time.
