Gilău brings together a Roman fort and watchtower with a more recent church history; Lacul Gilău adds sport fishing and a recreational complex. The first section of the Gilău–Roseşti–Mărişel–Uzina–Gilău route also runs along the lake. This gives you two distinct areas to focus on as you plan: historic buildings and fortifications on the one hand, and the lake and seasonal route on the other. The dates and precise locations help you distinguish between these themes and decide what you would like to focus on during your stay.
Roman History in Gilău
The Roman fort of Gilău is located in the dendrological park of Wass-Bánffy–Barcsay Castle. It stands on a plateau overlooking the center of Gilău, at the confluence of the Someşul Mic and the Căpuşul stream. The park, plateau and confluence describe different aspects of the site: its associated park, its position in relation to the town center, and its location at a river junction.
The Roman-era watchtower Turnul de epocă romană de la Gilău - Dealul Cetăţii is in the forest, 2.2 km southwest of Gilău. It was directly connected to the auxiliary fort and monitored both the fort and the road to ancient Napoca. This provides a useful way to compare the Roman sites: the fort’s location is defined by the plateau and confluence, while the tower’s forest setting and monitoring role stand out. Together, the two sites show different aspects of the Roman defensive landscape.
Church Architecture in Two Periods
The history of the churches also offers distinct points of reference in time. Construction of a stone church in Gilău began in 1896; it was painted in 1936. The dates therefore mark different stages: 1896 was the start of construction, and 1936 the painting, not a continuous construction period. By contrast, the “Adormirea Maicii Domnului” Church was built between 1983 and 1989. To place the town’s history in context, you can compare the earlier sequence of construction and painting with a later church building.
Lacul Gilău and the Seasonal Route
Lacul Gilău lies above the confluence of the Someşul Cald and Someşul Rece. Sport fishing is available at the lake, and there is also a large recreational complex on one of its shores. Sport fishing and the complex are different options to consider when planning your visit. If you want to include the complex, check its current offerings in advance, as individual facilities may change.
The Gilău–Roseşti–Mărişel–Uzina–Gilău route starts in Gilău and can be undertaken from March to October. Its first section climbs uphill along the DJ107N to Someşu Rece and runs beside Lacul de Acumulare Gilău. This links that section of the route directly to the lake; the route description also specifies an ascent and a seasonal period. Conditions may affect whether it is accessible. Check the current route conditions before planning around it.
