Location and Landscape

Dealu Negru lies between the villages of Călățele and Beliș. Geographically, it is situated in the transition zone between the Huedin-Călățele Depression, known locally as Țara Călatei, and the Apuseni Mountains. The terrain is mountainous; spruce, fir, pine and birch trees grow in the forests. Nearby villages and landscape regions offer two ways to place the village in context when travelling.

Cycling Routes and Orientation

The Vasvári cycling route runs from Lake Beliș-Fântânele through Beliș and Dealu Negru to Călățele. In this sequence, Dealu Negru comes after Beliș and before Călățele; the lake marks the start of the route. It is considered moderately difficult and is suitable for people who cycle regularly. The Bánffy cycling route follows the Râșca–Dealu Negru road and reaches the Huedin–Beliș national road after about two kilometres. The routes therefore offer different points of reference: the Vasvári route links the order of the villages with its difficulty level, while the Bánffy route is defined by its connection to the road and the approximate stretch to the national road.

Churches and Local History

The wooden church “Sf. Voievozi” in Dealu Negru, at house number 4, is listed in the Cluj County monument register as dating from 1764 and belonging to the Orthodox faith. In 1935, it was moved from Finciu to Dealu Negru within the same commune of Călățele; on 26 June 2012, it burned down completely. This is distinct from the Dealu-Negru branch church, which is dedicated to Saint Hierarch Spyridon. The two details refer to different churches: the construction and fire history belongs to “Sf. Voievozi”, while the dedication to Spyridon belongs to the branch church.

Cultural Traces

A traditional Șezătoare (social gathering) was held in the cultural hall in Dealu Negru; it was organised by the “Tudor Jarda” Popular School of Arts in Cluj-Napoca. Residents wore multicoloured traditional costumes at the gathering. At the same time, an exam for a weaving and sewing course with 69 female participants took place there; the course was coordinated by master folk artist Elvira Gavriș. Traditional costumes and textile crafts add a cultural perspective to the local history beyond its churches.

Cuisine and Nearby Destinations

A 2018 report describes the first mushroom and forest-fruit festival in Dealu Negru, calling it the first of its kind in Cluj County. At the festival, residents prepared a mushroom stew with garlic and Groșcior, following a recipe described as a hundred years old. A report dated 10 September 2011 also described a potato festival in the Râșca–Dealu Negru area that attracted thousands every autumn. The reports also differ in geographical scope: the mushroom festival took place in Dealu Negru, while the potato festival was described as being held in the wider Râșca–Dealu Negru area.

The Fântânele-Beliș Dam and Râșca Transilvană Monastery are among the tourist attractions near Dealu Negru. If you would like to include either destination in your travel plans, check the current access conditions in advance.
